I've done it several times over the years and it is not a problem. Even better now with the new icons (no shades). Your original ID will be active for 30 days.

I have changed my eBay User ID 4 times since 1999 without any problems. I recently changed it to my sales website.
Ebay will allow you to have a User ID of (for example purposes) www-yournamehere-com but not www.yournamehere.com or yournamehere.com

i changed mine not too long ago from my email to a regular user name...but i don't like the new name and will probably change it again when i think of something new.
