This was "liberated" by my Uncle during WWII

WHAT do they call the pic in the bottom? Hold the stein up to the light & ya see this photo:

WHO is he? NOT the Kaiser, I'm pretty sure. Crown Prince, perhaps??

This stein is in fair condition with one 2cm repair at the rim & is made or portcelain + pewter + glass.

Dated 1901

Are these valuable at all??

THANKS!! THANKS!!

It's called a lithophane though some spell it lithopane as well.

Value depends on maker, subject matter, etc.

Sorry, I don't know who that fellow is except now I've got that whistling tune in my head again.... I Was Kaiser Bill's Batman.

Hi Tom, LOl! Kiara I have never heard that song before either, but I read someplace the song most often sticks in our heads is the Chili's baby back ribs commercial.
Tom I use to concentrate a great deal on Breweriana mostly neons and signs, tins, etc, the stein you are showing I know as lithopane and they can sell for a nice sum, the ones that people requested were the ones where there was a figure or a profile of a woman. I hear the lidded ones are the most desirable. I have seen these sell at auction around the $90.00 to $100.00. I believe there is a stein with a child that is also desirable, I wish I could be of more help with the soldier.

It was a popular tune in 1967 by Whistling Jack Smith...... a one hit wonder.

Tomwiii, I have a consingnor who is always coming across these and he gives me them to sell for him. I can't be sure from the picture you have provided, but it looks just like the ones he finds. Does it have blue painted decoration on the handle? They are not from 1901, they are reproduction, but older reproductions. I usually list them as ( in this case) "German REGIMENTAL Repro LITHOPANE Lidded STEIN". If there is a reference to a particular battle or war, I will add that if I have the room. Latte is correct, the most I have sold one for was $120.00, most go for right around $100.00.
Here's a tip...there are very recent reproductions being made...most of these will have a "risque" lithopane bottom. These are not as valuable.

Did they make repros in Germany during the 30's & 40's?

We know this is from at least 1945, which is when my Uncle scoffed it up in Germany.

THANKS!!

Tom,
they are considered to be "commerorative replicas" more than reproductions. Meaning they were not created to decieve the buyer. They all pay homage to either a great leader, branch of the military or a specific battle. There are US repro regimentals also. Most of these were brought over to the US by soldiers of the WW2 as souvenirs. When I listed my first stein for my consignor, I did not know this either. In error, I listed it as an 1890s stein. I received an email from someone from a collectors club, directing me to their web site, that's where I learned about these regimental "repros". That's what the collectors call them, so putting that in the title does not diminish the value. I am trying to locate that web site right now ( it was a looong time ago). If /when I find it I'll let you know.

Hey Tom, my pleasure...anything for a fellow Cheltenhamian/Abingtonian.. I can't find the exact article I was looking for, but it was on the Steincollectors.org
web site...probably too long ago. Anyway, here is the link to the "ask a question" forum http://www.steincollectors.org/SteinTalk.htm
The lid of your stein is unusual, the steins I have come across with the pointed lid have been Austrian...but I am not an expert by any means, just relaying my past experience. You could always list it withour the repro...just as German Regimental stein. If it is a replica, I'm sure you'll hear about it from a collector!

Hi,
The patina on the pewter top looks too new to date back to 1901.

It's Mad King Ludwig!
Check out the resemblance -- especially in the style of facial hair. He was crazy in a sweet kind of way.

Tom... I sell a lot of steins. One word of advice, never pass up a good deal on any stein that has eye appeal to you and was made in Germany, Austria or Brazil. Grab them, sit on them until the first week of November and list them. They are very popular as Christmas gifts and 75% of your winning bidders will be women. Expect a lot of requests to ship to their place of employment or an address other than their home address, as they are trying to keep this a secret from their husbands. What doesn't sell before Christmas, relist on FLD or after Christmas. 90 % of the winning bidders on the relist will be men who are adding to their collections. The final selling prices and the sellthrough percentages in November and December are much higher (sometimes 100%) than during the other months.

The light at the end of the tunnel will turn out to be an oncoming train.
