I found this picture, but I don't have any idea who he is. The picture is about 8 x 10 and is on a thick backing, maybe it is matted. It was with some classical cassette tapes and sheet music... so maybe he is a composer?

I think it may be a young Christopher Columbus.

Any other opinions out there???
I have been trying to search for a young Christopher Columbus photo to compare it to... but so far, no luck. I can find a picture book on him and some older pictures. One of the older pictures does look similar.
I never knew Columbus never had a photograph of him taken. Nobody ever "really" knew what he looked like... all his pictures are just artist's impressions.
That's what I love about the research process... all those little things you learn.
If anyone runs across a photo, please point me in the right direction.
Oh, and does anyone know what this type if picture would be called? It's not a real photograph, and it doesn't really seem to be a painting... is there a special name for it?

My pure speculation,:
A) They didn't have photographs back then. The pictures you saw of 'old' Columbus were paintings, because he was a well-known explorer for the Queen.
B) There were no paintings of 'young' Columbus, because was a non-famous nobody. Paintings were expensive to commission. The average person could never afford it.
I strongly doubt that is a Columbus picture.

My money is on Dutch or Flemish.
Try flipping through a book on Rembrant or Vermeer.

http://www.google.com/imghp
Go here... type in whoever you think it might be and click search. Flip through a few pages and move on.
If your really desperate, you could offer up a few bucks on www.answers.google.com and someone may do the work for you.
You might start by talking to someone who knows the history of photography, since this is a photograph. Find out what probable time period this type of photo was taken then look for prominent figures of that era. Looks to be a professional image by the shading imo. GL.
My 2¢,
Rob
