Bought 35 pieces of old Fiesta ware at an estate sale today. When I examined them more closely, discovered that the orange gravy boat is not marked. Is the legitimate stuff always marked? Admittedly, I'm a novice and hope for some help.

I don't think it matters as long as the orange matches the other orange dishes.

Every single pottery maker in the U.S. has released pottery on to the market that is unmarked. Sometimes this was by design and sometime by mistake. There are instances of unmarked prototypes that were never manufactured or acknowledged by the pottery that have made there way out the back door by an employee. If you are lucky enough to get one of these one of a kind pieces, you will be doing a happy dance 7 days after you list it.

The light at the end of the tunnel will turn out to be an oncoming train.

If you're a novice, how do you know it was old Fiesta?

Hint: Some of the new colors and shapes are identical to the old colors and shapes.

To Fluffy-----I'm acquainted with the lady who ran the estate sale and have known her to be honest. She knows the folks who owned it. I believe her when she said she knows it to be old.....but maybe I'm a novice and naive, TOO.
I'm going to do some research to learn more before I list any of it.

Harlequin which is also made by Homer Laughlin is sometimes confused with Fiesta. Harlequin is not marked.
There is a fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."

Medium Green appears to be a FIESTA expert of sorts...

Thanks, everybody. Especially Max40. Think I'm on the right tract, now. Pulled up Harlequin and found auction 2642042180. This is exactly the gravy boat I have. So, apparently, some of the lot I bought is Harlequin, but most of it is marked Fiesta.
By the way, is that auction title "fair". The title includes Fiesta and Harlequin. I don't want to misrepresent by titling "Fiesta" if the Harlequin should not be represented that way.

So much for the honest estate sale lady.

I'm not saying she was deliberately trying to deceive; perhaps she just didn't know any better. Happens.

OK. So an older couple has some original Fiesta pieces that they use every day. Lo and behold, after decades Homer Laughlin starts reissuing Fiesta. Is it not reasonable to assume that broken/chipped/missing ware would be replaced with new?

Gotta remember that this stuff was everyday ware when it came out.

Thanks! Fluffy. I believe your analysis is correct. Logical that they would replace as the new came out. One more question, please. Some of what I have has "fiesta HLO
USA" indented on the back with no color added. And some have "Genuine fiesta HLO USA" printed in dark blue or black. Is the difference any indication of age.

i would say it would make a difference.

as fluffy said, when it first came out it was just everyday dishes...why would they put "Original" on the back?

The colors on newer fiesta are "off".

They aren't exactly the same, but to a novice, they appear to be at first glance.
