I'm selling a lot of stuff for my boss and one of the things are 9 small negatives. I can make out German soldiers and the Swastika in some of the negs. Can I sell these on ebay? If so, how would you word the title? I'd hate to have an auction pulled. I can't really tell what is on the rest of them. The negs are small: 1" by just over 1/2". These were taken by his father in WWII.

From the Ebay site map:Therefore, eBay will judiciously disallow listings or items that promote or glorify hatred, violence, or racial intolerance, or items that promote organizations (such as the KKK, Nazis, neo-Nazis, and Aryan Nation) with such views. For example, eBay will generally remove items that bear the marks of such organizations, such as relics from the KKK or Nazi helmets.

As Pierre says : "People are basically honest, when they are being watched."

Sounds foreboding, like "The Music Box!"

Ya might do well to get contact sheets & really see what ya have! Could be Ruldolph Hess's "Bon Voyage" Party!!

What are contact sheets? Forgive my not knowing. I still fail to see how education promotes hatred, etc. These were taken by a U.S. soldier.

If you have negs, they just print a set of prints all on one sheet without enlarging -- like proofs, so ya can see if any of the Heinies are showing off their heinies!

The negs would qualify as historical documents and shouldn't be a problem with eBay.

I was able to hold the negs to a bright light with a magnifying glass. They are mostly German officers. One are two Germans in battle and some marching. Not anything that wouldn't be considered historical in my book. Naturally, the Swastika is in them, but I don't have to say that in my auction. I'll call it a German Symbol or something lame like that. It was a horrible time in history but still it is "history". To ignore it or to try and forget it would be to repeat it.

If you can provide some backround for the images it may help the value, e.g, where and when taken, who is is them etc..

I know that there is one with an officer giving a speech and a lot of rather mean looking officers behind him. Don't think it's Hitler. Could be one of his higher ups? Have no idea who gave speeches. There is a pic of another officer that reminds me of Sgt Shultz from Hogan's Heros. Sorry, that is the only person I can identify him with. :} I did find a website (The Museum of Tolerance) that has photos, but since they are so small, it's next to impossible.

Having some information about those particular photos would probably greatly enhance there potential to sell and at a higher price then having no idea as to what they are about. There should be some WW2 war buffs that would like to own the photos in any case.

To maximize profits make pictures from the negatives. Sell the pics and keep the negatives. Also make sure to include a statement explaining that you retain all commercial rights to the pictures etc. etc. Good pictures of important events can be sold and resold.

I agree with "getalife" on two reasons:

1. I, myself, need to get a life! (love the handle!)

2. Why sell them just once when the potential of selling glossy 8x10s or 5x7s presents itself?

It's been a while since I reviewed eBay's policy on Nazi Germany items but when I last did review them there were restrictions on selling to certain countries.

Just did a search on eBay with the keyword Nazi - found 1497 items available. At random I found the following item offered and I borrowed the seller's text to present here:

Item #: 2180850384
WW2 DUTCH NAZI PARTY FLAG 2nd AD VET ITEM

"Rules prohibit any such items from being sold in Germany, Italy, Austria or France. I will not honor bids from these countries. The sale of this item does not constitute any reference to political or social views. This is merely a listing of an historical item for sale by a collector. No one is to infer otherwise."

You should be able to find the specifics for Nazi war memorabilia in eBay's help section. I don't think there's a problem selling them... however you MAY be cheating yourself by not knowing more about the photos... I'd have prints made and sell the prints.

Now how much should I send you for the negatives? <grin> Seriously, I would love to hear from you if you decide to place them on auction.

Greg

I am fairly confident that, if you list US and Canada as your only locations to sell to--at least, not Europe--you can probably do what you want here. Sometime I'd like to try an experiment--Take the same auction with questionable things like Swastikas in them and words like Nazi and concentration camps, list it twice. Once just the U.S., once international, and see what hapens.

Thanks all. I know I can have them made into photos and relist over and over, but I'd rather have them out of my hands. The really do make me uncomfortable even though there are no camp photos here. Hey, should I have listed them as Haunted German WWII Negatives???? I did list them, excluded Europe, put strong statements in the description and already have a bid. My boss wanted $10 and I started it at $24.95. Here is the auction number if you want to play along with me and see how long I get to keep it at auction: 2181545485. I also have some Vietnam photos my boss's wife gave me with two Vietnam Christmas cards. These things are too sad for me.

Advice: When you tell someone you sell on ebay, make sure they know that just because it is sitting in their cupboard that does not mean you can sell it on ebay! He and his wife gave me two boxes of stuff. Brother, I think I can only sell about 1/2 of it.

This is very odd. They are positives, not negatives. They are not full frame, either. They look almost like 35mm movie film, but US soldiers were not filming any Nazi speeches. What is curious is that it is Kodak film, so it certainly wouldn't be original German.

These could simply be frames from a War Department film, or perhaps a newsreel.

I think these were the sweethearts who murdered the American POWs at Malmady during the Battle of the Bulge, under the "leadership" of CHIEF SCUMBAG: SS-Oberstgruppenfüuhrer Joseph ('Sepp') Dietrich??

The size she gave sounds small for 35mm
Maybe 9-/12 mm

Ok, now I am totally completely utterly confused. Film strips? That's interesting. Never thought of that. Oh well, the photos are there and the bidders should be able to figure it out. My boss and I need to have a talk. No more things that I cannot identify! It's been too tough a day already to deal with it. We were on the freeway on the way back from the flea market when our Jeep just died. It was like someone just turned it off. So much for ebay profits.

I didn't notice the vertical soundtrack line until it was pointed out. Sharp eye!

Excellent points about the Kodak film and all.

I know the souvenir shops in Europe do sell B&W negatives and slides from original WWII war time action activities. I have about 5 or 6 sets that I purchased at Bastogne where the "Battle of the Bulge" happened.

You could buy slides of the Allies or the Axis side... your choice. Don't recall if any had soundtrack on them, but it's possible.

If your boss has the whole reel he will probably soon give you 9000 more small "negatives."

Good luck!!

Looks like I was historically incorrect!

Seems it was a different scumbag who murdered the POWS:

SS-Brigadeführer Wilhelm Mohnke

Biography

1933: Feverent Nazi; original member of the LSSAH
1940: ordered British POWs executed at Wormhoudt
1941: lost a foot in the Yugoslav campaign
1943-44: CO, 26th panzergrenadier Regiment; 12th SS; ordered Canadian POWs shot
1944: Ardennes Offensive; may have instigated Malmedy Massare with a "take no prisioners" order
1945: present in Führerbunker during Hitler's suicide
Captured by Soviets; released 1955; never brought to trial

My BOLD added!

No, I don't think my boss has any more. These belonged to his father who was a US soldier in WWII so I know they aren't new from a souvenier shop. I called the boss tonight and his father never went back overseas after the war. Still, he has no clue where his father got them. I guess he never talked much about the war. Can't say as I blame him.

P.S. After a $75 tow, the only thing the Jeep needed was a new module for $50. I'm breathing a sigh of relief. Last time it broke down it cost us $800.

Pure speculation but it could have been a film strip confiscated by the Allies and divided up between the troops that found it for souvenirs.

Glad to hear your Jeep is okay. That's why I don't drive newer cars... actually since they quit making cars there's no sence in me buying one now unless it's vintage! <grin>
