Listings are the lowest it has been since the middle of January when they were just coming off of a free listing day. NOW THEY ARE RETREATING. People have become smarter and that is bad for ebay. Sell thru rates are getting low, people quit listing and will come back in November. Profits on ebay at an all time low. Ebay needs new sellers to juice up their listings and revenue.
If their revenues are down the stock could take a dive also which could be disastrous. What could they do? They have tried a FLD on $10 or lower but that was just half price. Now what?

Aren't you the gloomy Gus. It's s-u-m-m-e-r. People are on vacation. People are taking a break. People are enjoying being outside after a long hard winter.

eBay needs to attract more buyers. They need to spend some of the money they make form us sellers to bring in more buyers forget bringing in sellers for now.. If sales go up the sellers will follow lke ants to honey.

Is this dbest you can come up with today?
If you are viewing the charts just click to other years and check the data.
Guess what? It's summer and the listings may take another dive later this week and then they will start to climb again in August.
You heard it here first, folks.

I have seen this happen time after time in my 30 some years of selling to the public get buyers coming and pretty soon you are overrun by sellers all cutting prices trying to make a sale.

The prices realized and the number of bids received on auctions is dropping. I think ebay knows it better than anyone else and part of the push toward fixed price auctions is because of those statistics.

Ebay calls themselves an auction. I have never heard of an REAL AUCTION that stops the sale when there is still bidding going on. Ebay should not end an auction on the second its secluded to end when there is still last minute or second bidding. They should only stop the auction when there has been no bids for say 5 minutes at the end. The way ebay does it now is fine for the snipers but the everyday non computer savy bidders are giving up bidding because they never win. I have had a few buyers tell me this. I wonder how many buyers don't say anything and quit bidding. I am betting a whole lot.

I said the same thing in the snipping thread. New bidders do not know how to snipe and give up as they lose out at the last second far too many times. The upshot is that when they see an auction that has a BIN or Fixed Price they jump at the chance.

It happens when we are all new. Then we wise up fast and learn the game. Either they learn to proxy bid or they learn to snipe.
How do you know they give up? Most everyone I talk to figured it out for themselves. With millions of items on ebay and many going without bids there are plenty of auctions for even an ebay dummy to win.

Now is the time to list if you want to sell your stuff. My sales are better than they have been in months. Why wait for fall when there will be millions more items listed?

eBay is advertising on tv up here is Chicago, so I'm guessing they realize they need to do something. However, I learned early on that summers do dip a bit. But ir really depends on what you are selling. Snowsuits and sno skis obviously do't sell that well midsummer.
Can I ask dbest, I've noticed your posts are usually of the ebay bashing type. Do you really sell there, and if you do, if it sucks so bad, why do it?

There are tons of ebay TV commercials in the SF Bay Area. I thought they were national ads. The ads are stupid though. I don't know how they can throw that unattractive fat lady aloft so easily while singing the ebay dork musical jingle? :P

I was actually impressed that they chose the woman they did. Honestly, very few people have supermodel good looks. Plus (God, don't strike me down for saying this since I know it's going to sound bad) wouldn't she represent the stereotypical American/eBay user?
that dorky jingle is a very infectious reworking of My Way. It got stuck in my head when I came into my computer room to work on my listings.

Clive - if dbest is honest - no he does not sell here. He stated awhile ago that he only lists on free listing day.

The summer lull is certainly part of the reason for reduced listing, but I find it naive not to consider falling prices andlow sell through rates as part of the reason for falling listings.

We're definitely lookin' at another reduced listing promotion cooming soon. I think all that of the sellers that think things will get better on ebay are missing the boat. Now is the time to sell as things may get much worse instead of better. Unless you like to gamble.

I visit the f*ckedcompany pretty regular and today some sobbering economic snippets are posted there.
There are two prestigious law firms that folded - Arter & Hadden and , Altheimer & Gray- I mean totally went belly up and fired everyone.
To top this news off, Waste Mnagement laid off 800.
I think our economic "slump" is far worse than many think.
Free or reduced listing fees are worthless if there are no buyers.
