I am not able to find any information on this Raggedy Ann doll, has anyone seen her before? I have searched many pages and many ebay auctions, but I can't find one that looks like this. She has no markings. She is holding a bear and has a very full dress. She also has a button necklace and a wood heart on her dress. Someone has sewn a postcard to her. The postcard was written when you only needed someone's name and city/state ... there is no address or zip code, postage was 1 cent. It's a happy birthday postcard.
The second item is a lamp. Can you tell me what the bottom of the lamp is made to resemble? There is a sticker on the light portion that says Underwriters Laboratories and Crown Creative Industries. The base is plastic, how can I tell if the lampshade is bakelite?

the Raggedy Ann doll may be a homemade one. this was a very common thing to make your own doll modeled after Raggedy Ann.
the lamp base is a coffee grinder. the link below will tell you how to test for Bakelite.
hope this helps.

Lamp: Coffee grinder?
The doll is nice with all her extra do-dads. Haven't a clue as to value. Research, research, research on eBay, paying attention to descriptions, to get an idea of value. I've seen several avid Raggedy Ann collectors featured on HGTV who have a passion for buying ANY R.A., both the official ones and assorted handmade. Just takes the right person viewing at the right time.
Good Luck!

Hi,
Here's a link about postcards. You might be able to sorta kinda date the doll by researching the card...

Hope this helps.

No Zip Code before 1962. 1cent stamp I think ends in the 40's. Neglus or lindajean should beable to tell you that one. It doesn't narrow it down much but did you look close at the postcard and what was printed by the maker on the back. Sometimes there is a date in there. Raggady Ann collectors will like this one.

Cute Raggedy; and just a suggestion; but I would list her as a 'One-of-a-kind Raggedy Ann Doll....as far as I can tell'. Explain that you've done quite a bit of searching on eBay and the internet with no luck; Raggedy collectors will find her and bid if they're interested. Raggedy was my daughters favorite .... many many years ago.

I forgot to ask you; does she have the printed on heart on her chest? as most RA do?

Looks like a coffee grinder to me. At least it's very unique.

She does not have the printed heart on her chest. And her hair int he back almost looks like it is pulled in a bun by her neck, it's doesn't all look like the front. Her clothing doesn't seem removeable, and I was not able to find any tags on her clothing, nor anywhere that a tag had been cut off.
Thanks for the help! DH went out on a limb with her. He normally spends $5 or less for a box of items (we can't afford to invest more than that in something we know so little about), but he paid a whopping $11 for her.

RE the post card on the RA - US postal rate for post cards stayed at 1 cent until 1952 ( more or less - there were a couple of times when they tried to increase to 2 cents and then went back to 1 cent) -so the post card surely dates prior to 1952 ( although an old card could be affixed to a doll at any time)- probably the real value in your piece is the doll itself and not the pc.

Thanks AuctionAce ... My top is a little different, but otherwise it looks the same. Hopefully I can get $10 out of it, I would be happy with that.
I looked closer at the postcard and didn't find a date. I did find it was made in Germany. It looks like there is a date on the stamp, like a postmark. It's not on the round postmark, but one next to it. To me it looks like it says 1912. Can anyone verify if this could be a year stamp from the postmark or if it is not even relevant? Here's the pic:

1912 is the year the post card was sent alright - but as i said earlier, that might not have any relevance to the doll itself - could be an attempt to "antique" a doll. Birthday postcards from that era are a dime a dozen and wouldnt have value unless from a famous maker/ artist and in good condition - it looks like you have a repaired corner so this PC wouldn't qualify as "good" condition.

Thanks neglus... it looks like Raggedy Ann wasn't even created until 1915, so this post card has nothing to do with the doll. It could be that they were both gifts from the same person and the owner just put them together... but it doesn't help date the doll.
So now another question... would you guys advise that I remove the postcard and not mention it in the listing for the doll... or would you leave it attached?

I would list her; as I said before; as a one of a kind "as found"....mentioning that the bear and the postcard were attached when you found it. Be sure to list the size; show closeups, and let the RA collectors decide her value; I'd bet you'd make some $$ on her!

Great! Make sure you say in the description that the post card was postmarked Fremont Ohio...that might be a clue to the doll's origin and people who are into genealogy, hometown history etc might bid along with the RA collectors!
