Just activated new computer with Win.XP. Spend fruitless time trying to bring up spell check on Outlook Express. Finally went to book store and bought help book. It seems I do not have Microsoft word installed so that is why spelling is blanked out. Oher than a dictionary on my lap and careful proof reading of my e-mail ( I never really learned to type), are there any other options?

is your new computer a Dell? If so, I believe it comes loaded with Microsoft WORKS which is a cut down bargain basement version of Microsofts products. See what you have for word processing software in your new computer. I don't think you need the WORD software to do a spell check

Also I think there is a setting in Outlook express for spell check. Are those the ones that you can't access? They should be from the top of the screen:

Click on the "TOOLS" tab
Click on "OPTIONS"
Click on "SPELLING" tab

Please let me know if this works. There are a few other things to do with a new computer that might help in your using of the new computer.

Yo! SellLow! I have XP & I donna have WORD, but my OUTLOOK EXPRESS spell check still be there in fine condition...

GOTO: "TOOLS" >> "SPELLING"

Just tested it to make sure I wasn't talking through Ralphie's hat & it worked fine & dandy sans MICROSOFT WORD!!

Tom,
I have XP too, but don't have spelling or spell check under tools or anywhere else.

I see Office 97 software sometimes at the flea market. We bought one for $2 once. A slightly older version of MS Word in it but it's compatable with all versions.

Just finished downloading 3 hrs of Windows updates and have returned to answer. No! I got a fast Compac Presario with Pentium processor ( Maybe I should have ordered a DEll) and there is no spelling under tools or anywhere else. There was an Icon but it was gray so I assume now it was not enabled. Checked about 3 books in the store before buying one and they all stated that there was no spell check in my Outlook Express because I do not have Microsoft Word.

Yep- I am out of luck. The information on the link provided was correct, I guess and 3 hrs of updates did not change the situation one bit. Cannot decide if Microsoft goofed or if was a deliberate attempt to get users to buy more software.

Buyhigh, use Works. You must have MSWORKS on your computer.

Or use the spell checker in your ISP's mail program (if they have it - most do)

BTW, I thought compaq comes with Word? You should do a search on your computer. Click on start, then scroll up the menu, click on search or find and in the box (find/search what) type in *.doc if nothing comes up,

type in the word: works*.*
or
MSword*.*

With all the cracked versions of MSWord flying around... get it and put it on your computer...

Will cost you nothing.

Most computers come with MS Works at least. Mine came with MS Works and the latest Word. Fortunately, I have several copies of MS Office in various editions. Too bad they are all upgrades.

You'll get used to XP before long. It's really the most reliable OS that MS has come out with. I've had it for over a year and never one single problem. That's more than I can say for my MS ME OS or Win 98! I hated it at first and now I love it!

I have a compaq windows 98 and in my Microsoft word there is spelling. Go to your start menu, click that and go to microsoft word. Click that on. Do options under the tools menu and there are many things you can check. It is over to the right....click spelling & grammer and then you will get another box. Check the areas that you want. Hope this helps. I like my Compaq. It is old but good....

Spell check was on Win.95/98 and I used it all the time in outlook express. On XP I believe you find what you have by clicking on programs all. Real simple to find. I know I have Mworks -M money- M encarta encyclopedia deluxe and Quicken financial center 2003.- no word but a friend claims to have a bootleg copy of word so perhaps I will borrow it

Sure spelling is there-first on the list- with f7 to hit on the keyboard but it is grayed out- or whited out and you can click on it all day or hit f7 and nothing will bring it up because it is unavailable even if you have Microsoft works installed which I do. That is what I was trying to explain.

Outlook Express uses the spelling checker provided with the following Microsoft Office programs: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint. If you do not have one of these programs installed, the Spelling command is not available.

" I think you need an iMac."

Why spend money on an imac when you can get redhat or mandrake linux free. I had no clue what I was doing when I installed it and found it to be just as easy to install if not easier than windows 2k. You can run your system dual boot so you dont have to give up windows and you dont really need to worry about viruses. Plus at least one of the many web browsers you can get for it has a built in dictionary.

Since I lack all 3 of the Microsoft programs listed above, I cannot bring up spell check which is what I was trying to say in the first place. I just asked for other options. I might take a chance and use that bootleg copy a friend has. Anyway, I think the subject is finished and thanks for all the responses.

The only thing you cannot do with a bootleg is get updates... other than that they work fine.

Actually though, MS office standard is not that expensive and if you know a college student it can be even cheaper...
