Took the one out of my old puter and hit with hammer about a dozen times - also did with that with the memory boards. This was suggested awhile back but I cannot burn them where I live. Should I put the hard drive in a bucket of water and leave for awhile or have I done enough before I discard in the trash?

You should have done a secure erase with Norton before you removed it from the computer. If you run a strong magnet close to the case, you can erase everything on the internal disks.

Yes, I have a strong magnet and will try that and I did have a lot of personal financial information on it. I realize there is one chance in many millions that the hard drive would be fished out of the trash somewhere but then some people do win lotteries and look at the odds there.

I think I wrote a while back about some college students that did research on Hard drives. They collected over 100 from thrift stores and what not on thos hard drives they found 37,000 credit card numbers and a bunch of other important information. The conclusion was destroy your hard drive. Do no give it to anyone or any thrift shop. I think you probably killed it the first crack of the hammer....if not the water did it in for good.
