Hello!

I know how to do the basic html on Ebay (from what I learned on the site), but I have noticed that there are some very fancy pages that people have created that far outshine mine.

Am I at a big disadvantage because mine is so simple?

So far I have done pretty well with the auctions I have had, but am getting ready to put up a bunch of new items this week and wondered if I need to learn to create bigger, better and bolder sites.

This is not for a full time business, but I would like to be successful when I sell my items!

Thanks for taking the time to help me!

Laura

In my opinion, you are better off to have a clean styled auction with fewer bells and whistles to make downloading the page slow.

Most likely what you are looking at are sellers who have software for uploading auctions that have pre-made templates for you to use. Vendio here does that, as does auctiva, auction submit (though I'm not sure they work anymore) and a myriad of others.

If you're going to be doing any amount of listing on ebay, I highly recommend getting some kind of auction submitting/management software. I'm using auctiva myself and like it fine. Haven't tried many of the others out there though, so you'll want to shop around. Try doing a web search on "ebay software" or "auction posting software"

The only thing I can say is don't put music on your auctions. This is a really big turnoff for me. I also don't like that stuff that follows your pointer around. I myself like plan and simple auctions with all pertant history,
The other stuff just takes up time and space.

And, if I may add, please don't put those stupid cursor tricks like the one where an entire hive of angry bees is chasing the hell out of your poor defeseless cursor. Those sellers that use those low-down programming tricks should be be sent staright to Hades in my opinion.

Thank you very much for the great advice! I actually didn't realize that this was software, but that makes a lot of sense.

I completely agree about the music and the distracting effects. They annoy me as well.

Do you find, though, that you prefer and respect the sites that use the submitting software? They do look very polished, but does that bring in more bids?

The more I thought about it, the more I saw that there were two schools of thought. One is that if a site is pleasing to the eye, you may be more apt to place a bid.

On the other hand, a person might be scared off from a site that was too polished, as they may feel they will not get as good a deal (ie the person will not let an item go below its value).

I am very interested in your feedback! I will also check out the pricing for the software that you mentioned, Deana.

Again I appreciate your time and help!

Deana,
If you use Auctiva, what do you use Vendio for? I must be missing something here.

More important than the bells and whistles: a good title (including all pertinent keywords to be picked up in search), good pictures (don't use eBay's very inferior IPIX image hosting service), an accurate description and of course...a reasonable starting price.

Tessa,

Just the message board! I really like this board..I think it's the best I've ever come across for getting help. Auctiva has one but pretty much only for Q & A and complaints about their software.
