Hello. I need some advice on taking pictures of white color clothing. I had a older Sony Mavica floppy camera and it worked great for us. Of course it broke. We now have a Sony Mavica CD 350 camera and it works great. However I cannot seem to get a nice shot of white color clothing! All of our dark ones come out fine. But shooting on the white color shirts it comes out real dark. I shoot in a room. Tried flash, no flash, etc. For a backdrop, used first a light color towel with the shirt laying flat on it. Came out dark. Then tried a dark gray towel with the shirt laying flat on top and it did come out a little better but still dark. Any advice? On this camera there are more added features then the one I had on the Sony floppy one. Thank you.

My mavica does really well with whites when I shoot outdoors in the shade, no flash.

My big problem is to get blacks to look black. I've had 2 beautiful black tops sitting in the closet for 2 years, new with tags, because I can't get the color right.

This is what I did. I went to the fabric store looking for cloth for a backdrop. I found some two sided material that is used to make raincoats. It is thin enough to be a table cloth but very flexible. One side is black, the other is grey. I found it helpful when taking fotos of black or white things. For black, I use the grey side and for the while, I use the black. Then I fool around with the color mixtures in the software that came with the camera.

Hope this helps

Does your camera have a white balance adjustment? Setting it for proper lighting conditions makes a big difference.
There is a fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."

The camera does have white balance. I tried them all and they are about the same. All have that "dark" look to them. Currently I have it set on the auto mode.

Your camera came with some image management software. Why don't you give that a try?

See what the camera's menu can and can not do.
There's where your money is at.
If you can color correct, then try that.
White is hard. The camera's brain want's to make it 18% grey, so it will darken it. Plus you have contrast to deal with.
If you have manual iris, or a way to increase the brightness, then open the iris or up the brightness. Sounds ironic, but you need to overide the camera's feverish attempts to think for you.
Good luck!!!

Would you be talking about the EV adjustment? I have it set and +2.0.
Still shows up dark. Driving me batty!
The other floppy Mavica we had was great. I did not have to do anything to the camera.
White color came out nice and bright. Same area, cd Mavica camera, trying all different settings and still comes up dark. I even tried using a plastic black trash bag for a backdrop and still the shirt came out dark. This time however the back was brighter and the white shirt was dark.

I have a Sony Mavica Digital..one of the older ones. The imaging software that came with the camera was Photo Studio. When I take pics of white color clothing, I go into the ENHANCE Feature..choose HIGHLIGHT and plus it up to about 20. After doing that you can choose CONTRAST and plus up about 5-10. Here is one of my white clothing pics using the method above (hope my link works) <img src="http://imagehost.vendio.com/preview/ci/ciao346/.thumbs/rufflewhtteddy1.JPG">

Remove the $ from the closing tag and it should work.

I have a Mavica FD73 & inside a white background comes out pink or peach, according to how much light I use, outside same BG comes out light blue or grey.

I did sell a pair of white jeans once & hung them outside on a plant hanger & they came out a perfect white. Why, I don't know.
The only problem I have with my Mavica is white coming out white.
I even played around with Photo Studio, not much luck there.

mcjane,

I have the same camera that you have and the same problem adjusting white levels. If you play around with the photo program you may remove the pink or blue cast by adjusting the saturation levels.

I've corrected the white but I've changed the skin color in ciao's photo. LOL

I've also played around with the software before but didn't think the saturation would "whiten" the whites. Will have to give it a try. Strange, sometimes the whites look very white and other times they do have a pinky cast to them.

I got this using the adjustments in Microsoft PhotoDraw:

The program is great for fixing color. I have a Kodak DC 3400 and sometimes my whites come out a bit on the blue side.

Helen

PhotoDraw has an automatic tint adjustment. I click on the area that is supposed to be white and it makes it white. I then go into the hue and saturation and play with that a bit in order to get the skin tone back where it should be. I've been using the program for so long it's second nature. I like it so much more than the other photo editing programs. You can do nice borders and backgrounds with it too.

Oh, it also does shadows, embossing, embedding and other web stuff. I've tried the Adobe products (I think I have every one of them on my 'puter) and found them to be not near as friendly a program as PhotoDraw.

Helen, that's not bad at all. I never played around with saturation, but will try it. Thanks for the tip.

Cheryl, That is as good as it gets, beautiful.
How did you do it.

Uh Ohhh

I just checked and according to the Photo Draw site, it has been discontinued.

Back to the drawing board. LOL! Guess I'll have to learn how to use Adobe.

You are all welcome! I'm sure you'll be returning the favor someday! And Helen will do it by personally helping to remove someone from somewhere they have no business being. LOL! Helen knows of whom I speak!

Helen:

There are several copies on Ebay now. Do a PhotoDraw search. Glad I found out. I'll be sure to treat mine like gold! It figures. MicroSoft has something that really works and they discontinue it. You may still be able to get copies in some of the stores if not off of Ebay.

Thanks, Cheryl

I was able to find a newly listed copy...unopened. Someone has a high bid on it so I'll check back at the end of the auction and win it!

Wow, I'm so happy that I found out about this.
