EBay expectations running high

By Carolyn Pritchard, CBS MarketWatch.com
Last Update: 3:01 PM ET July 24, 2003

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Quarterly results from online auctioneer EBay were scheduled for release after Thursday's bell as the earnings season's busiest week finally started to wind down.

Shares of EBay (EBAY: news, chart, profile) hit a fresh 52-week high during Thursday's regular trading session, a reflection of the market's high expectations. The company sales are anticipated to nearly double in the latest quarter, to $505.94 million from $266 million in the year-ago period. Analysts also expect the company to earn 35 cents a share for the second quarter, up from 19 cents last year, according to Thomson First Call. See full story.

EBay stock rose to touch $117.86, its highest level in a year, early Thursday. At last check, the shares were trading up $3.33, up 2.9 percent, at $117.47.

Where is the sellers share?

Are you a stock holder?

As just a seller, you don't deserve a "share"...

Why it's our money making then richer. Without sellers ebay would be nothing. As for being a stock holder I may and I may not. That's my business. Not for a public board.

Meg has repeatedly claimed that at least 150,000 sellers at ebay do it for a living so that makes ebay and 150,000 sellers that are getting richer because of ebay's success. I applaud anyone that can consistently make at profit at ebay.

I get a share as a seller. It is called the profits of my business. If I did not feel eBay a worthwhile venue I'd move on, I've left other markets in the past when I felt they were not profitable. Currently that is not the case with eBay.

Sellers in reality are a dime a dozen, but investors keep the money flowing...

That is why I asked if you were a stockholder... when eBay went public... they are really the only ones who count.

As always, Ebay has decided that the "little guys" are no longer important. I have/had a positive feedback of well over 1300 and am a silver power seller, I would STRONGLY advise anyone who lists/sells less than 500.00 per month to cut and run like hell as far from Ebay as possible. They have/offer no respect for anyone, and have gotten so money hungry that, again, they feel that somone who only pays a mere 1000.00 per month in fees, should be treated as a dust ball. RUN AWAY FAST!!!

What do you guys sell on Ebay that makes money? Is it auction item? BIN item?

What could you possibly be selling that repeats itself profitably? Just curious.

Please! There are too many sellers and that would help out a lot.

How many of those 150,000 sellers are just getting by making a living? I doubt if many of them are getting rich from selling.

It's interesting to see that less than half of the registered users are active. Why don't they just delete the inactive accounts?

Meg never said there were 150,000 sellers making a living and getting rich on ebay. Nobody is holding a gun on them to stay at ebay if they are barely making a living.

no one said they are being forced to stay on ebay.
no one said they have to leave just becausee they are barely making a living.

If anyone is unhappy with selling on ebay they should simply give up. That is what the little quasi-unknown auction sites is all about. Or they can go back to selling at a flea market. To rag ( or whine ) on ebay constantly about sellers not making money gets old. Ebay must be doing something right.

Ace, you are right. But what will they lose? All the inventory the bought for selling?

Somebody once told me about a pagan auction site. Listing is free, etc. Never got around to checking into it though.

Stop, I think the close-out wholesalers are doing good. They get to do it in conjunction with their regular business. (Have a warehouse and all that.) And what about that lady who does all the designer clothing seconds? The did an article on her and the designers now ask her to list their items! she is doing really well.

Maybe she/they are the exception.

Sellers do not enjoy barely making a profit on ebay. Ebay is a very tough place to sell and make a profit. Very few can actually do it. What makes 'em stay? Most new B&M businesses go out of business in the first 6 months. Why do they even try? Same thing with ebay. They hang in there and blame the weather, the economy, ebay fees, etc. just like the luckless Brick & Mortar sellers. I consider selling on ebay to be something like a very clever puzzle that very few people can solve. Lots of people try but few get good at it ( sorta like the horseracing track ).

Like any business, when the entry barriers are low,you are going to see hordes of people trying.
what does it really take to roll your dice on ebay-a pc ,a phone line,an account with the ISP,most of us have them already.
add a camera/scanner and a credit card, you are all set to roll, all you need is to find some items to sell.some dont even bother to venture outside their house to find something to sell-their old clothes, shoes, toys, headbands or whatever they can find in the garage.
but give it time,i think the dealer cleansing has already begun,it began years ago,it was just not so obvious as more and more new sellers keep coming.
They may have ginsu knife, but we have DING KING!!!!

eBay is a buyers market. We have been buying alot of merchandise off ebay at very low prices, and selling the goods at our mall store. Its almost sad the price sellers at eBay are getting these days. Good for buyers, horrible for sellers.

Your both right about many new ebay sellers and a buyer's market. Many new ebay sellers do start out selling the crap in their closets or garages. They often consider that all profit and brag of their selling prowess on ebay. When their crap is gone the hunt is on. Bags of books or clothes for a dollar or two and they are armed with inventory. Or $5 boxes at the local live auction.
The same thing happens at flea markets. The new sellers crow that they made $400 and it was easy. It was the stuff in their garage or closets that they paid a lot more than $400 that they sold.

I have not found that to be true.

You do have to work at it, though. It's not like having a real-life job where you might do twenty minutes of real work a day, and where the rewards are just as miserly.

I came up with an idea last week that will save my business $1200 a year in supplies. At my real-life former job, no one would have cared except maybe to say "Good idea". Now? I gave myself a bonus.

I stopped short of having a plaque made, though.
I am not a bathtub full of brightly-colored machine tools on Vendio.

I once saved a big corporation where I once worked about $2,800 in a 'cost savings submission' and got a ball point pen with their logo on it so don't tell me they big boys don't care.
