What's best for a computer? Turn it on and off 3 or 4 times a day or leave it run. Any ideas?

If your clock is loosing time you probably need a new BIOS battery.

I live is South Alabama as well (Pensacola) and I turn mine off every night and lately in the day as well as those boomer's can be bad.

Also leaving it on all the time is just exposing yourself to stuff like viruses for no good reason. I also buy computer insurance (Radio shack product about 170 for three years) Best money I have spent in a while).

I used to log off the internet server and just leave it on. My worser half says that during the day I should go to "log off," then "stand by." Says it uses less electricity, and it's quicker to get back on the internet. So I do that. I haven't seen virus problems, but then I use Norton.

I do turn it off at night, though.

With today's electronics, it really doesn't matter.

Whatever your choice is will work...

About the only way to get "hacked" would be if you used your computer and had it shared along the network.

Other than that it would take an open port for someone to get in.

I have a 2100 AMD processor and was using Windows 98 and had a miserable time keeping the time correct even with checking it every morning at the time website. I had other windows problems also, like not able to keep AOL running long enough to download a picture. I also changed the battery three times in a month thinking the batteries I was buying were old. A computer store technician advised upgrading to XP Professional and the problems all went away. Can't believe that was the problem, but he sure convinced me. I have three computers running all the time here at home, just in case I need to get on one in a hurry, and I never shut them off unless I need to reboot for some reason, like it locked up, or had an illegal operation problem, or one of the other unknown nasty problems that sometimes happen. One has been running constant for over two years, and knock on head, doesn't have any problems.

I leave mine on as long as I am home. If I leave for any length of time (overnight eic) then I turn it off. Otherwise I have it set up to go into "sleep" mode after 1 hr. I usually turn the Monitor off when I go to bed. I used to work for Blue Cross/ Blue Shield of MN & we never turned a computer off, even for a T-Storm. Now I live on the Central Coast of CA & hardly ever have a T-Storm. When the 'puter is in sleep mode & the monitor is off, you are using the same as a 30 watt light bulb. It is much harder on the "puter" to turn it off & on than to leave it running. The surges when you turn it on are really hard on it.

I usually turn mine off. But then, I'm at work all day so there's no need for it to be on. I have it set to go on standby when I'm away from it for long periods of time. I used to keep it on all the time until one of the 'puters at work had a power supply go bad because the thing was never shut off. The part was only $35, but the labor was $60! I have cable Internet so the computer is always connected to the Internet. I just feel safer shutting it down.

As for storms, we've had a lot of those here lately. I have a box called CyberPower 375SL. It's a great backup power system. The only thing that's annoying is that when the power goes out, the thing sounds an alarm that can only be shut off if you turn the box off or the electricity comes back on.

I used to leave mine on all the time until the kids started using KAZAA - I admonished them to TURN OFF Kazaa when they were done but...they never did.

Found out when I had the Geek Squad out to install home network that eldest daughter "forgot" to install the antivirus software on her pc last fall when she went to college...I installed it yesterday and there were 22 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! trojans - all from KAZAA..wonder her system never crashed!

The computer nerd has to put her two cents in. With today's computers, it doesnt matter if you leave your computer on or off. If you want to save electricity, turn it off. If you have a DSL line or cable modem and are worried about hackers, atleast log off.

If you computer is losing time, it's probably the battery that is the problems as mentioned in a previous post. To "bandaid the time/clock problem, there is a handy little untility that doesnt add spyware to your computer, runs really well and is pretty easy to use. (I have nevertried using it with windows XP. It's called Rocket time. What it does is syncs your computers time with atomic clocks http://time.rocketsoftware.com/time/default.htm

Great thanks for all the posts. I guess I have learned to leave the machine on during the day and turn it off at night. About lighting, I think if it hits a power line close enough to your house there isn't any surge protector that is going to stop it. I don't think a little on off button is going to stop lighting no way. Am I right about that? I was once about 40 feet away from a tree that got hit and it blew a bunch of bark off the tree. I was close enough to smell the burnt air.

JACK! How good to hear from you again. It's been quite a while. Just the other day I was cleaning out some files and came upon your A to Z instructions, which I'd printed out.

I will *never* forget the kindness you showed me in stepping up and telling me not to panic or give up, that you would help me through listing (with pictures!) in AuctionWatch. And you did. (I had no one close by who could be of any help at all.)

Last we "spoke," you were headed for That Western State (you know which one) for the winter. Hope all is well with you. Your kindness to me has been repaid many times over through my helping others with little problems here and there, when I could. Happy, happy life to you.

The only thing that concerns me about leaving it on, is burning the fan out as its always running. ?

I have been reading this with interest and essentially do what the majority does:

* On most of the time
* Monitor off at night to save electricity
* System off during storms and when gone overnight

But something else came to mind. If "with today's computers it does not mater", then maybe we should shut down at night to save ware and tare on the hard drive. I lost one recently so I am sensitive to this subject. When you consider what goes on in there, a series of disks spinning at thousands of revolutions per sec. it might extend the life of the hard drive. Any thoughts?

The wear and tear on a hard drive is not an issue as computers automatically go into standby mode when not used. Same thing with a monitor. The fan going out possiblity is not really a factor either because when the power supply fan goes out it's history for the power supply anyway. The computer will just shut down. What if the refridgerator motor goes out on your fridge? If it goes, it goes. The debate years ago about leaving the computer on or off always centered on the power surges of when the unit was powered up and down. That's a lot of wear and tear on the unit and monitor. Today's computers have power savings modes and such and are made to be efficent.
