I ordered a book on one of the online bookstores. The book never arrived. I sent an email to the seller asking when it was sent, tracking number, anything to help track this thing. The reply I got from the seller:

"Unfortunately, the postal service does not provide a tracking mechanism for items shipped Media Mail"

WRONG thing to say to me. I know better. If this person was honest and just said a tracking number was not used whether it is because they are too lazy or too cheap to use it, would have been fine with me. Just don't lie. It always comes back to bite you in the you know what.

Thanks for listening. I am done steaming. Now back to your regular program in progess.

To play the Devil's Advocate a bit, there are a lot of novice sellers that do not know about DC or EDC. Many are expierenced enough to place a 'seller not responsible for lost post office shipments when insurance is not added' disclaimer.

You're right, you can't blow smoke up a seasoned ebay's butt.

if this is amzn, the shipping fee the seller is getting may not be enough to get a dc ,
plus amzn has this buyer protection program.
as for seller, all he has to prove he has shipped is to show the post office receipt, not any dc.
some sellers on amzn make money on shipping ,not on the book

stopwhining:

Amazon Pays $1.84 for Cd's and $2.26 for books to ship Media Mail (More for Priority)

To ship a CD, DVD or light book (Under 1 Lb):
Postage $1.43
Delivery Confirmation through Endicia $0.12
Total Postage: $1.55
(Proof of delivery...priceless)

Figure in $0.29 for a bubble wrap envelope, and you break even on shipping. WITH Delivery Confirmation. If it's a book under 1 lb, you actually make a little on the shipping, since Amazon pays higher for books.

Granted, this seller may not be using Endicia, but still that is no reason to LIE about it.

They do. As I said, they pay $1.84 for CDs and DVDs, while they pay $2.26 for books.

Yeah, there are plenty of penny sellers. There are plenty of people out there that can ship items without paying for postage. They're mostly idiots who don't know the value of their items. But yes, they are very common on Amazon. No difference than all the $.75 books on Half.com.

And yes, some books weight a ton. That's why anyone with any sense wuldn't sell them for a penny.

Fun to read these boards. You guys make me laugh!

Paloma, I felt the same way as you when a buyer bought something from me and said it was chipped. Emails me and says she bought it for a gift. Come to find out this "buyer" is a "seller" who specializes in these very same items. (Does her own restoration on them an everything!) I was like you. Just pissed to be lied to. Okay, if its chipped and I missed it fine, return it...but dont friggin lie to me and tell me it is a gift when you probably were going to resell it. I felt like emailing her back, you sell these things...what the hell you telling me its "a gift for somebody"?

Some buyers and sellers think everybody is so damn green. I guess she saw my FB and saw I am fairly new to the game, but I'd hope I'd at least got the basics down. (Dont know why she didnt think I couldnt find her on ebay. Anway, I held my typing fingers and just let it ride, though.)

I sell books casually on Amazon and mainly computers on E-bay. IF I ship out something low-end and don't have DC, I'd refund in a heartbeat. If it costs some money, say $50 or more but certainly when it goes to $1000 or more, it goes out delivery confirmed and insured. I'd rather eliminate those headaches and pay a couple of pennies or dollars more than listen to it some place else. Maybe with the margins in used computers I can afford it more than lower margin, higher volume items and selling my wife's textbooks after her class is done seems like found money and I'm not as concerned about margin...I looked at a computer item today that says $70 freight and 2% shipping... in my mind as a seller, figure it out and add it to the price up front. Same way I don't understand when people complain that they bought an item for 20 dollars and paid $20 to ship it and the seller's actual cost was on $5...since they knew the shipping cost up front when they bid, they should factor that into acquisition. If the combined price is ok, be happy. If not, don't bid. Seems simple... Ok I ranted enough
