Okay, this time I'm not looking for help identifying a manufacturer or a pattern - I'll save that for later on a few other great finds -- .

I can't find that, either, despite numerous Internet searched and countless books of marks, etc.

Here I'm looking for some guidance on what to call this little bowl. I can describe the colorful transfer image, that it's porcelain, rimmed in bright gold, etc., etc.

Does anyone have a suggestion or two on what the use of this bowl/cup/thingy would be? Someone suggested it could be a rice bowl - but it's made in France and has no handle - or I would call it a demitasse cup. So I know it's not that. I've sold them before...

It measures 3.5 inches in diameter at the mouth and the base is just 1.75 inches in diameter. It stands 2 inches tall.

Any suggestions would make my night as I\'d like to get this listed and let the world tell me what it's worth.

Thanks for your consideration.

Wayne

It is NOT a demitasse cup; they're smaller than this and generally have handles and saucers--like a tiny coffee cup.

It could be an open salt or a finger bowl.

I have some VERY old cups (pre Revolutionary) that have no handles. I got them from my grandmother and she told me that they date to a time before cups had handles and that people (even genteel people) used to pour their tea/coffee into the saucer to cool and drink from that.

My husband grew up in Switzerland in a house his family has lived in FOREVER (built 1703) and they drank coffee from bowl like thingies with NO HANDLES.

Thanks for your thoughts, folks. I do appreciate your take on this.

I think it might be too big for a master salt. Finger bowl could be - but a bit deep for that...

What would you call the detail at the bottom - a foot or pedestal - ie. a footed xyz...?

Okay, SW, I'll include some possibility of it being a French Rice Bowl" as well as the other possibilities.

I appreciate your persistence.

I think he's correct! After the fall of Dien Bien Phu in 1953, Gen Giap forced the defeated French troops to eat RICE, inspiring the famous, oft-quoted:

"Let them eat rice!"

As Ralphie says: "Ya learn something new everyday!"

Do you think he was ripping off Marie Antionette's even more famous line:

"Let them eat CAKE!"

And I know this aint no "Cake Bowl"...

Okay, you sillies...

ANYBODY knows it's an aebleskiver bowl, designed to hold just one aebleskiver... LOL!

Seriously, it looks like a rice bowl to me. Perhaps from French Indochina?

Okay, Tom, calm down, take it easy, it's okay...

You said it was an S-Car-Go bowl and it can be that if you want it to. LOL!

BTW, you don't HOLD an aebleskiver, you EAT it! With lingonberry preserves and powdered sugar. Generally when you're in Solvang (Danish community here in Central CA) or at my house when I get inspired to make the blame things.

Well, Iknow this one! It IS a coffee bowl.
You drink your breakfast cofee, made with lots of milk and sometimes toasted bread crumbled into it form a little (or big) bowl. It's great in the winter, as the bowl warms your hands in those poorly heated Chateaus. And the kids drink milk with a drop of coffee from them. Most of them are footed, presumably to keep the hot bowl off the fine woodwork. And, yes, Sorbet gets served in them too.
That one is a beauty!

Thanks to everyone for all of the suggestions. There are a few I have not considered, because I hope they were meant in jest. Others, however, have helped describe this little gem very clearly.

Thanks again for your assistance and help on this one.
