We have a cable modem. I never did figure out exactly how to network the two computers, I can't get them to see each other. I have the cable ling going into the modem, then to a lynksys hub and the two computers are connected to that.

Now my problem... I keep getting dis-connected. My downstream dBmV reading is consistently at about -14 to -18. Is this normal? I only know this because the cable guy had typed in a page that showed this to him, and I bookmarked the page.

I had the cable guys out and they replaced the lines from the outside wall to my modem. They also put some little screw on thing between the cable line and the modem, just a little knob thing. This seems to make things worse and I have removed it, but sometimes putting it back on gets my connection going again.

I have seen things that say they enhance your cable signal. The ones I saw were about $100. Is that what I need? Do they work?

Do not ever rely on cable guys for a good answer. They told my neighbor the reason she was having problems was "the hole for the cable going into the house is too small and squeezing out the signal"!!!!

I have a cable modem too. My understanding is that there is signal degradation based on the number of times the connection is split.

My cable modem is gone as of the end of the month. Going back to DSL. For me it's cheaper and I can connect all of my PCs (4) without worrying about the signal strength.

Hey, that's what they told me! Well, they gave a similar excuse. They said the cable line was nailed to the ceiling too tight (those u shaped cable tie-downs) and therfore the signal wasn't going through as well as it could.

The line comes into the house and then splits 3 ways. The one with rated the best goes straight to the modem. One of the others goes to a tv and the other gets split again for 2 tvs. The first cable guy to hook up our service cut all the connections, so none of our wall outlets work.

If you have a firewall set up on one of the computers that will keep you from seeing it.

Also make sure both computers are members of the same "workgroup".

Cable TV is weakened slightly each time it is split ( boosters can help ) but cable internet weakens almost not at all no matter how many computers are connected. I'm sure the cable company loves to spread these false rumors to help prevent some users from connecting more computers. If all the computers in the home were downloading music files at the same time there would be a noticeable drop in speed but that rarely occurs because most homes are downloading files at the same time.
