I have some hidden text in my listings (nothing that isn't fully legal) and I'm now using a template that has a black backround. My text color is white. It is automatically inserted in all my auctions, so I can't just change it to black for this auction, or it will show up black in all my auctions. Is there such a thing as "clear" so I can use it universally in all my templates?

No

If it's really Common Sense, why do so few people actually have it?

Ok, how about an html code for hidden text? Found out it exists, just couldn't find the code for it. Just so you know it's on the up and up - the only thing I have "hidden" in my auctions is the words fairways and maile leis. I use those words so I can have a link to my other auctions. I have a "click here" to view my other auctions, and the search will come up with fairways and maile leis in the search field.

Never mind - suddenly had the uneasy feeling of someone turning me in and having 400 auctions cancelled overnight. Decided to just put "click here to Visit my store Fairways and Maile Leis" in my auction.

Why hide anything? The bad guys hide stuff.

Remember the controvery many years ago about the subliminal messages buried in commerical. At the theaters there were milli-second flashes in a preview that said BUY POPCORN and popcorn sales would rise.

I think it is against ebay rules to use text that is the same color as the background.

Philisophical conundrum.
If I am selling something that I describe completely, then think of a word I should add, I will stick it in the bottom.
For example. If I am selling Parakeet feeders, and I describe them to a T, I might ad "canary" in white text, because the item can also work for a Canary. Or I might throw in Budgerigar, even though throughout my auction I said Parakeet.
Now, is that illegal? Even though it makes the auction cleaner.
I hope that made sense. But I don't think it's nice for example, to sell your freaking cheap Indian import beads in your Delica auctions....ahem...but that's me!

I read the "other board" and saw it was to be a method of letting special other bidders find the auction. I don't see why a special set of character near the bottom of the description would work and the ebay search engine would find them ( a code like "12#67&" for instance ).

Aside from the powerseller thing (Ace explained it well).......

The other thing I was doing is actually a good way for any seller to link their auctions together to get people to combine shipping. If you sell a lot and want people to buy more (as I'm sure we all do) I would suggest you try it. It took me days to figure out the links, but now I have them all stored in my computer. Just find a set of words that only your auctions will have so people can find them easier. Since everyone here already knows my ID, here's an example of an auction. If you click on the link that says Click here to view my other exercise dvd's you will see that the search field says "fairways and maile leis". That way you only see my auctions and can shop some more

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?MfcISAPICommand=ViewItem&item=3338702378

What you can't do is have numerous clicks saying
click here for my other widgets
etc.

That's considered keyword spamming. The links have to be related to what you're selling.

Make sense????

I'm confused. What's wrong with using the View seller's other items function on an auction?

If you right click on the View seller's other items link in any auction you will see this property link

http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewSellersOtherItems&userid=*****&include=0&since

( with the 5 asterisks being the ebay ID of the seller )

Can't you just use that link to show only your items?

I used to use that, but I had at least 5 emails a week from people saying "I'm looking for XXXXX title and I don't want to search through 10 pages of your auctions to see if you have it - can you just let me know". I figured this way people can navigate through only the auctions that interest them. You can do it with anything. I just listed 8 Wilton yearbooks last night, and it was really easy to create a link so they could just see the other yearbooks instead of having to scroll through pages of videos and golf items to find them.

Hopefully that makes sense.

I see, if a seller only has a few listings the link works best but with a lot of listings it gets cumbersome. A set of specialized codes buried someplace in the description might work ( or is that what you already use? ) Let's say any yearbooks would be coded 6tta6 and any cookbooks were coded 6tta7. Then you could make a link from the ebay auction description search of the code words and send them those links. It is illegal to have hidden text on ebay but I'm sure that only refers to keyword spamming or other ilegal activities. You can make the text to your key words the same color as your auction description and they you won't have people thinking what are those odd numbers and letters about. A template with designs makes that tough to do though.

That is what I use - I use the words Fairways and Maile Leis which is the name of our store. Then I just click on the catagory that the item will be under and click "search in titles and descriptions" and copy and paste the url into the auction. It's a long url, but if you use the 'click here' code you can't tell. It really has worked well. On my "me" page I have all the items catagorized for easy navigating (since you're allowed to keyword spam there). I still get the occasional "do you carry XXX" email, but they have definately decreased. I think the idea was originally posted in OTWA, and I noticed one of my competitors was doing a similar thing, except with drop down boxes (which is considered keyword spamming since everything listed in the boxes comes up in a search - so I don't use the drop down boxes)

I put a link in my auction that connects with the "search" function in my eBay store...but it works for my active auctions too...don't know if anyone ever uses it but I figured it was a handy way to see all my related postcards instead of wading through all the pages.

I don't hide the link but i am tempted to use the "white text" idea for adding words that don't "follow the flow" of the rest of the listing (ie all the variations of state abbreviation with and without periods for my postcard listings.) Thanks for the idea!
