I know that this has been discussed before.
I came across an auction tonight that said this,
Buyer pays handling/service fee, insurance and shipping fees. Fees: Handling/Service Fee is Total Price plus 6%. PayPal: If paying with Paypal, Total Price plus 3% for service fees here. Example: $10.00 + 6% = $10.60 or with both: $10.00 + 9% = $10.90

Seller has auctions that end above $200.00 he has feedback around 200, with most of it from buying.

I emailed the seller and in a very friendly way told him it was a no no, to do this.
His response
I have seen others here on eBay saying "if paying with PayPal, add 3%".
Now one could say, "if paying on line, add 3% to total price".
What is the saying two wrongs don't make a right??

I myself as a seller and I am sure some would agree, that if we could, we would charge the buyer a fee for using paypal and state it upfront. As we know tho,you can not say you are charging a fee for a paypal pymt.

As having a retail store, it is a convenience for the buyer to use a credit card, and also for paying on-line.I would love to put a sign in our store saying mim credit card purchase of $15.00 or something like that.We can not by law.I sell alot of plastic signs that are $1.95, with the tax $2.07, and pay with a credit card. kills me.

The credit card company's want you to use plastic.

Just would like to hear your view.

I would not and am not going to ebay, to rat the guy out.

We used to have a merchant account years ago and I remember very clearly that it was against Visa/Mastercard policies to have a minimum charge to use their cards. It was also against their policies to require anything other than a proper ID to use their cards.

However, I've seen it even recently at local bricks-&-mortar stores where clerks ask for someone's phone number to be written on the credit card receipt. And, like Rodieken, there are plenty of stores around here that have minimum charges to use a credit card.

In the past, when I was younger and much more naive, I would try to help local merchants understand that those card issuers' policies. However, I've had one or two tell me that those policies have changed and I didn't know what I was talking about any more...

Are you confident those are still in place - that there cannot be a minimum charge to use their cards?

The way I feel about it is let them charge all those fees. Maybe they will send bidders my way because I charge no fees. I generally don't worry about another seller unless what they are doing will steer customers away from my auctions. I don't think this will.

RE: Minimum Credit Card Order In Stores.

I think if you prominently post a sign that says "We request minimum purchase of $15 for credit card purchases" you would be OK.

If someone goes and tries to use the credit card for a smaller purchase and you deny the transaction, might be the point the credit card issuer may have a problem.

Just my observation from dealing with similar problems in the past.

It was not the exact same situation, but a store was breaking a similar Credit Card Merchant Rule. They were asking to see ID to use a credit card that was signed on the back. (A No-No)

I asked the credit card merchant issuer about it and they said the store could do it as long as they did not deny the sale because of it.

So if someone said they were not going to show ID and they denied the sale, there could be a problem, but it was not a problem that they asked.

This was a USA sale only lower 48 states, as stated in his ad.

still is.
If you post a sign asking for a min. purchase of $xx.xx dollars for a credit card,
you are breaking the law it is a federal law.If you call any merchant services and ask them, they will tell you that.

Also how many new that, it is also breaking the rules to run your own credit card threw your own merchant acct.We would change the tape and to make sure it was working correctly, we would run a $1.00 threw to make sure with 1 of our own CC's. A big Fat no no !!!!!!

Forgot to spell check and you can't do it on edit.
