Here is another finding from the same estate sale. It reminds me of the one my grandmother gave me that she pulled out of ashes during the 1906 earthquake. It too is ceramic bisque? Has a slightly rougher Feel than grandma's does. No markings anywhere to tell who made it. I should sell it but I really would like to keep it. What do you think? Old or new from chinatown?

I think it's Lefton? Angels were a hot seller awhile ago. They are really pretty. Not from China for sure. We have a pair right now on our dining room table that my husband picked up for 25 cents a piece and they say Made in Japan but they are beautiful.

The ones that my husband bought have a paper sticker on Made in Japan and nothing else. Remember Lefton was made in Japan. Lots of angel collectors out there. I sold a pair of lefton angels for $60.00 but that was back when people appreciated fine items. They are keepers in my book...

if they are very rough to the touch, they may be new pieces. angels came back into vogue with "Touched by an Angel" tv series and you can find them everywhere. without a mark you are pretty much at a loss on description of maker.

Old porcelain will be smooth to the touch. Is there no paint wear anywhere? If they're as old as 1906 and there is absolutely no paint wear, they'd be pretty dirty (IMO). My grandmother, too, had figurines on the order of this (my mom has them now). They are smooth to the touch and there is slight paint wear here and there from normal cleaning. Also, hers had no gold anywhere. Still, without a mark. . .could be anything. I'm a lot of help, sorry!

I think these little sweeties are brand new. I saw some like them at a local imports store. The new bisque stuff is rough to the touch, because sanding it first is too labor-intensive even for the Chiniese factories. Your pair have such a sweet expression in their eyes!

They look brand new to me too. The little import stores have shelf and after shelf full of angel figurines and most are priced under $3.95. The Asian mass manufacturers are quick to spot buying preferences and trends and promptly flood the market with items.

Another way to tell is from the quality of the painting and the colors used. The wings look haphazzard to me. Also the flowers in their hands would be more finely done (with highlighting and such). I base my opinions largely on old oriental figurines. You can tell the new from the old by colors, technique and wear. Things are more massed produced today and they lose something in the quality by that.

Still, they are sweet and I'd probably keep them. I have an angel collection at home. Most are new and I love them all. Once you tell anyone you like something (angels for example) you get one for each and every birthday and holiday. I once told someone I liked cows (back in the early '80's). I now have a kitchen full of cows.

LOL Cheryl! I was just joking with my mother about her elephant collection. She started when she was in high school so you can imagine how many elephants she has. She took a couple to work for her office and from then on she not only got them from family and friends but also from the people in her department. Most of her collection is now in boxes, when she gets tired of the ones he has displayed, she packs them away and unpacks some of the older ones but the family has now been warned that unless it's very unique or somehow special there is a moritorium on elephants.

Whoa!!! Paloma!!! I swear you would think we went to the same estate sale !!, except the one i went to was a couple months ago ... my mouth dropped open when i saw your angel here because i ALSO bought two angel wall plaques in your EXACT same style at the SAME estate sale I bought the yellow crystal tray w/ small bowl at!!!!!!!!!!! LOL ... eerie!

The bisque angels, I have sold one at ebay a couple months ago [that's when I bought all these], and I still have one left I will post a picture here in a day or two ... it is at the antique shop and i'm at home right now ... both my angels had/have orig. label and i'm getting old with poor memory but I believe it is the silver & white Napcoware label... as i said, i promise to post a picture of her here in a day or two ... the one i sold already at ebay went for 9.99 ... the other one i hung onto because i'm thinking about maybe giving it to my Mom, who collects angels [her whole condo is decorated in gold and blue and angels] ... these are really beautiful angels, and i feel they are quite well done ... I'm guessing the age is not 'antique' but surely not brand new ... they have on the backside the label [as i said i think it's napcoware], and a small hole to hang them on the wall ... I will retrieve mine from the shop next trip over there and post a picture of her front and back here ...

Marcia, that is so sweet of you to take the time to take all these fotos and post them just to help me out and to educate me. (smile) Thanks so much. You have your own antique store! Where is it located? What state?

I should pull out my grandma's statue and take a foto of that so you can see what I mean. I'll try to do that later on today to. I wouldnt part with that piece for love or money. one of the only connections I have left to her.

i'll get that little angel fromt he shop tomorrow ... ~
