There was an estate sale where the father had died and the mom had moved far away. The daughter was selling everything for a buck or less. I went nuts. Shouldnt have as I am a REAL novice at buying antiques. The piece looks in great shape. EXCEPT when I took a closer look when I got home, I notice that figurine had something in her hand. Did part of it break off? I have no idea. The bottom has a blue/white paper sticker that only says JAPAN on it. The stamp into the ceramic is a red circle with a capital "N" in the middle. I did as much checking as I knew how to and came up blank. Any feedback on this is GREATLY appreciated.

See Fluffy! You should have gone with me. See what kind of trouble I get into??? (griN)

I believe that is Napcoware....I don't know if being broke will effect it greatly or not.

Paloma, the "N" could be "Napco" and if you do an ebay search you'll see those figurines and planters have small and growing collectors group for them. Seems to me the market for made in Japan articles is really expanding rapidly, but it is a really hard catagory to pin down because alot of it looks and feels like the same things made in china, taiwan and even some american made figurines. Yours does look like Napco or maybe Lefton, (but that doesnt seem likely with the "N" but they have a similar look with the eyes and the eyelashes they way they are painted.

Hope that helps!

Tessa

She may have been holding a parasol. I have a similar looking figurine and she has a little spaghetti poodle on a chain leash from her other arm or hand. She's packed away now so I can't check the mark.

Yes paloma looks like something is missing or broken off. Either that, or it is a v-shaped vase she is holding. I like the idea of a parasol. Alot of them do hold those!

YOu know, it seems to me that the broken-off part is going to greatly affect the possibility of a good sale on this item.

I too have brought home things that I then discovered were broken like that, and I've just donated them to our thrift shop. If you've got a lot of energy these days, though, you could try to sell it. If you do, let us know how it comes out, please!

I reallly messed up on the MFG mark on the bottom of the lady. It isnt an "N" with a circle around it. (I posted the corrected foto above.) It is an N with a C superimposed on it. I still can't find it in my book of marks! grumble grumble I guess I was really tired yesterday.

Try Norcroft, Norcrest.

There is a fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."

With the the broken parasol is it even worth researching at all? Are there collectors of broken figurines out there?

It's an obvious toss in the trash to me but after seeing the rusty pocketknife sell you never know on ebay.
