Can anybody help me identify this? I am trying to figure out why it would have been so expensive - the bottom of it had a sticker that said "Mays Dept Store $250.00". Underneath was a gold label, but I cant pull it off as it is stuck to the Mays label. I believe the roses are porcelain and it does have some glazing/cracking so I assume its an older piece? (I know Mays was a dept store in NC that sold souveniers and novelty items).

Any clue would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks much!

ps: if somebody could blow this up, I would be grateful, too!

Mays was a department store here in Cleveland, too. Sold everything places like Kohls and Dillards do. The oriental items I collect are mostly 19th century so I'm not going to be much help here. I don't think it was made in the orient, though. The colors are all wrong. I'm mostly referring to what looks like a lavender color on the vase. The plastic leaves on the flowers reminds me of some my mother had back in the 1970's. Sorry I can't be much help. There are collectors for things sold at May Dept. stores, though.

you said flowers are porcelain??but the leaves look plastic??
this is a japanese vase, as you can tell from the design of a flowercart.
japanese items are expensive as they do not mas produce for exports market, but i cant see this vase selling 250 dollars.
may be they mean 250 russian rubles or indonesian rupiah or turkish dinah??

I wonder if some GooGone or similar would take the Mays Department Store sticker off gently enough to get to the important gold label? The gold label may hold the key information as to the maker of the vase. I can understand why you may want to leave the flattering price sticker. But GooGone does work wonders and you can put the price sticker somewhere else on the bottom of the vase once it's seperated from the gold label.

use a hair dryer on the sticker, once the glue heats a little, it will peal right off. my dear hubby taught me this and it works like a charm...no residue left behind either.

do not think it is a flower cart but a carriage used to pull a wealthy person around in and I too cannot figure out why such a high priced sticker is on it because except for finely made Japanese antiques, such items used to be quite inexpensive. Could someone have peeled off the sticker from something else and put it on this?

I thought the cart looked more like an elaborate gyspy wagon for the Far East. The guys in the wagon probably didn't steal chickens like some other gypsies did though.

Thanks Everybody!

I did try to steam the two labels apart, but that didnt work. Will try the goo be gone. Funny thing is the leaves ARE Plastic, but I am almost 100% sure the roses are porcelain. I dont know if somebody stuck the Mays sticker on there but i dont think so because I found it at an estate sale in a box that apparently they didnt thoroughly look in, or somebody dropped it in there, and they didn't look at the bottom when they charged me for it.(Guess because they saw me pull it out of the box.)

If it is worth 250. its probablly the most expensive thing I could sell right now. ha. be nice......

Cheryl, it feels more like from the 30,40,50ties with the crazing on it. Dont think its any older than that. Maybe even 60ties??

Oh well. Thanks for the clues.

Neroter: Is this a vase? Or a half-vase with a hanging hole on the flat back? If the latter, it's a wall pocket.

Whether it's a vase or a wall pocket, I'd bet anything that the flowers didn't come with it but were just stuck in there by the owner. That's basically what wall pockets are supposed to be for--to hold things, up against the wall.

Not for me, though. I collect them and have about 150 now. I like to hang them in groups on the wall--forget about fake flowers etc.

Roads,
Thanks for the suggestion. No, its definately not a wall pocket and has no hole in the back. Its a tiny vase. (I may just have consult an antique dealer in person to see if its worth anything!)

Could be 1960's, but I get a '40's feeling. Anyone else? It would be important to see that sticker. Many companies made things in the oriental style. I have pieces made in England and Germany that you would swear were made in Japan.

The price sticker could be one of those "let's put a $250 price sticker on the item and then try to sell it for $50" marketing gimicks. The buyer thinks they got a mega deal and the store sells a $20 vase for $50. It happens all the time.

Ace, could very well be.

Cheryl, all I can see under the Mays sticker is a oval gold label. Which makes me THINK Japan, but there's no way of telling. I cant get them apart.

BTW, thanks for the suggetion to call that other buyer on pre-shipped item. You were right. She said she couldnt match up the item to paperwork. Turns out she is a seller as well.. it sounded it a little flukie to me, but then again I guess I can understand things coming and going and not being very organized, and maybe something gets passed over. (I really think she was stalling because she told me, lol, I didnt have a PP link in auction which I most certainly did -and she couldnt figure out how to pay it without one.("I'm thinking, and she is a seller here? But reading SalGals posts anything is possible.) Anyway, after I sent her request for payment from PP, I got my money. Would not have called her had you not suggested it, so thanks!! Tessa

could it be possible that the flowers dont belong there, something else was in there originally?that may explain it is 250 dollars.
may be marimmoto pearls, not sure how to spell it.
