Everyone who uses the internet should be taxed $30 per year. Everyone will then receive a free copy of antivirus software with automatic updates. That should stop most viruses.

It won't though, virus protection tends to work if you update is regularly. Programmers are a smart group, they will find a weakness and exploit it. I won't even touch the tax issue, I just contacted every representative in my state because I am about to have my state income taxes increased, and just a couple of months ago my county imposed an income tax. I feel taxed to death. The funny thing is that I updated my anti virus software tonight, and when I sent this message to 57 representatives, it told me it suspected it was a worm...

All of the stories I've read or seen on TV say the viruses only spread when users click on attachments to emails. Some attachments may be clever sounding attachments, but attachments none the less, and any numbskull opening an attachment that they're not sure about should be thrown out of the gene pool. ( just kidding )

Ace, That is not true. My friend contacted the MSblaster worm last week, couldn't get it out so took her puter to Gateway Country Store. They removed it. Yesterday I hooked it up & went into Symantec to get the latest updates, & got the new worm. Never opened an email of any kind, just got it off the internet. Have now installed a firewall plus all of the MS windows XP updates. No more worms for now.

Just what we need, another tax. And just so the government can tell us how to use our
computers by telling us to run their preferred antivirus software which they will give to us
humble subjects and taxpayers. Do you really want the government doing anything for
you that you could really do yourself? Don't you know what happens when the government
decides to "help you"?

Then they will need more revenue so they raise the tax. And they'll decide we shouldn't
be seeing porn or spam or political rhetoric or whatever in our email and they'll need more
infrastructure to fight whatever it is they think we don't need so they raise the tax again.
And then they'll decide it isn't fair to tax the poor who use the internet so there will be a
refund to the internet connected poor.

And business needs a tax break on their internet use so there will be a new table and two
forms to attach to your return. And then there will be a national crisis involving a virus that
didn't get stopped or took advantage of a weakness in the governments antivirus software
that they found out about by forcing the government to disclose under that freedom of
information act. And a new antivirus department will be formed. With the ability to certify
users, equipment and software. And a enforcement division who can arrest individuals and
condemn "dangerous equipment" while stopping any behaviors that are not in the public
interest.

Yeah, I need the government involved with my computing. What we really need is for the ISPs
to filter outgoing email just enough to see a guy sending a bunch of emails all at once with
attachments that just happen to contain a virus. And some well known ISPs could quit sending
me bounced emails because my address was in the return path and instead maybe send it back
to the party who sent it in the first place.

Or better yet. People need to pay attention and not open every dang file they get in emails from
people they don't even know. And while they're at it maybe they need to not be so fast to jump
on every "good deal" they see or fill in every form they get in an email. And maybe they could
decide to not be duped by every scam that comes along. Like sending an email to everyone they
know and then getting $5.00 from people who also believe "Dave Rhodes" was a financial genius.
Or forwarding every virus alert, destitute child alert, Bill Gates will pay ......, and Good Luck email
to everyone in their address book.

Spam wouldn't be a problem if everyone would refuse to deal with any company or individual who
has ever sent them a spam. But people buy viagra and drugs from someone they don't even know
(in Canada even) because the price was right. They buy web services from some guy who promises
the world @ $7.95 a month for 100 megs of hosting and Domains @ $8.95 a year. Then they
hire a web developer in China or Russia at $200.00 and a guy who can send their message and
promote their site to 2 million people for only $395.00. Or cigars from cuba @ $2.00 each.

I'd could go on and on but my wealthy Nigerian benefactor is calling me to get my bank info so
he can deposit the first of several million dollars into my account. We're going to invest it all,
split the profits and be rich rich RICH!!!!!!

Yes, something like Manditory Car insurance. It will never work...Cars are easier to control than the internet and no car insurance is way out of control....

I have control over virus protection. If you don't know the sender then delete. Even when I know the sender I delete anything with an attachment. Who cares about those silly messages, I don't....

i think you can unknowingly run some java script that is tainted, or some other when you go to certain web sites.

Most of the better ISP'a are integrating it into their software anyway.

To me it is obvious, especially with layoffs and all, that "some" of the programming geniuses at Symantec, McAfee and the other anti-virus industry houses, more than likely in their "off-time" are creating new virus to release on the public.

Not everyone mind you, but a large portion. Hey... if all of the virii were eradicated then there would be no further use of this industry and therefore the programmers would be unemployed - but... if you have the ability to create, enhance and establish your own job security (or the companies for that matter) then you can bet there are those unscrupulous few that will.

We see this action in big business everyday - we don't like it, but it is there. The wee folk don't have a say in it at all... only the royalty does, not the commoner.

Business would like you to think they are offering a fix for problems - what they are really offering you is the solution to the problem they created to enhance their own revenue in the first place. Spam is nothing more than a virus - now you see Anti-Spam programs everywhere... yeah.. they got us where they want us.
