I bought these ash trays?, at a garage sale. there were five of them, two are the same, paid 5.00 for the lot. The seller called them a bridge set.
The cards are trimmed in fired gold & the animals were fired with mother of pearl. They are marked Japan & are not well made. I bought them because they looked old, are they?
I couldn't remember if pre war was marked Japan or Made in Japan.
Should I even bother to list them?

Hi Mcjane,
They're cute and old and from Japan and have lustre glaze, all of which makes them worthwhile. If they were mine I'd certainly list them. A lot of people collect ashtrays.
Here's an auction for your elephant one. No bids on it yet but you've got a whole set.

Mighty cute! I'd list them for sure. And mention elephant and rabbit in your title--many collectors of those animals out there. Can't tell if one of the other animals is a cow - and is the fourth one a cat or dog?
These are Very Vintage, and if they're ashtrays for sure, a cross-collectible in tobacciana and - hmmmm - something else - Made in Japan in the porcelain or pottery category.

Hi McJane,
Is what is painted on the ashtrays the four suits from playing cards? It looks somewhat like it? If so, and if people still play bridge or poker, could be a very nice set to have. There are the playing card collectors as well, that they might appeal to.

I thought the fifth one was a duplicate, but on second look it's different, looks like a pug dog.
Yes each has the four card suits.
I found these at a garage sale when on vacation with friends in Beach Lake, PA. While there we went to Bethel, NY to see Woodstock & check out the museum. I expected to see a corn field where the festival was, but it's still like it was 30 years ago. A beautiful & natural ampatheatre with the area where the stage was, plainly marked & a very nice monument. Lots of flowers & other momentos were left by visitors.
I always thought Woodstock was at Woodstock, but it was really in Bethel, NY.
Anyone here lucky enough to make it to Woodstock??
I really took a lot of kidding from the group for buying these junky ash trays. I told them I would get 40.00 for them on eBay!
None of them has ever even seen eBay, in fact only one is on-line.
They are in mint condition, but the workmenship is very shoddy.
Hope I get more then the 5.00 I paid just to show them up.
Here is something else I bought, two glass paperweights, identical, 2.00 each

McJane, I had 2 paperweights almost like these, only mine were Holophane Glass.
I auctioned one off for $20.00 and asked the buyer if he wanted the second one. He jumped at the chance and we were both happy.
Your ashtrays might surprise you. They are cross collectibles. You have animal collectors, game collectors, ashtray and tobacianna collectors, Japan items collectors and card collectors.
Make sure you mention each type of animal separately.

Hi Jane, they are neat, recently I had 4 round glass ashtrays each one had a different suit on the center bottom, with all the suit symbols going around the inside rim, I listed in cards and ashtrays and I believe the round ashtrays could serve as a coaster also, I put that in my description. You have so much going on these: they are luster, elephant trunk up, and look at the excitement on Tom's and Ralphie's rabbit plate. I had 2 bidders battling it out and it sold in the mid 30's, to a woman that was going to surprise her bridge club with her new find. It sounds like you had a nice vacation.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the help. You can always count on experts to come through for you. I love this place.
I will list the ashtrays Sunday, & put all the info given here, (which I never would thought of myself) along with the paper weights. They were interesting to me because they had the company name on them.
Hi Reenie..........yes, Tom's plate, now thats something else, I think it belongs to Ralphie though.

The first book dedicates about 24 pages of the approx. 200 pages just to these ashtrays.
No, yours aren't junky, they look better than many of the others that they show. I just found two similar ones and one has a dog and the other is a peach lustre "blob" or "glob" animal described as a "mystery animal".
This book was copyrighted in 1994 and it valued each ashtray as $10 to $15.

Peach Blob LOL, don't have that one.
I thought I had two of the same, but all five are different. I think I should list them all. I have a good picture, black BG, but will take them over & add the fifth one.
