My ink cartridge ran out after printing only about 100 shipping labels and new ink cartridges are expensive. Has anyone tried those ink cartridge refill kits with any luck?

auctionguy: I havent used them, but other I know otheres who have give very different opinions on them. One says they are messy and found out they can ruin the printer thing-a-migg mechanism. Another person swears by them and says she saves so much money, she would not do without. I have been considering it but never got round to it.

Have you tried printing in draft mode? Maybe that could help?

I bought some cartridges for my epson stylus 825 from a guy on ebay...I only paid $3-4 for both black and color. They work most excellent...He sells a generic brand they make themselves. The epson usually costs around $28-30. I'm very happy.

If you have an HP product and it is still under warranty... do not use a "refill", if it causes your print head to clog or go bad... you get to eat the cost of replacing that too...

Refills are a crap shoot... the difference between inkjets and laserjets is that the toner cartridge for a laserjet contains everything you need to print, well almost... the only thing you may run into is poor print quality.

However with deskjets (ink) the print heads can become clogged and useless, the ink can leak out and cause you hours of cleaning... also ink does dry out, so becareful of getting old cartridges...

Jack is right, if you can pick up a cheap laser, best way to go...

Never tried a refill kit.

Been buying my ink lately from Iowa Ink (www.iowaink.com).

I use a cheap Epson Stylus C40UX (which sucks ink) and can get a black cartridge from them for $1.95 and the color is only $3.95.

No real complaints. Had an extra ink on the paper for awhile, but I don't think that was the cartidge since it seemed to happen on the $15 Epson brand some too.

Personally, I want to buy a laser printer so if anyone has any recommendations on a cheap, network compatible laser printer, I'd love to hear them.

I just picked up a cheap refill kit ($5.50 incl/shipping) on ebay. The last 100+ feedbacks of the seller were all positive. I'll post the results when I get it.

I use a Panasonic or Oki dot matrix for all the routine stuff. For quality prints, I have a HP 4P that I got at auction for $10.00 (it was part of the Montgomery Ward Liquidation sale). In addition to the good cartridge that was in it, I got two spares that haven't been used yet. I should be set for quite awhile now.

We've tried the refill kits for both black & color cartridges. Followed the directions exactly and the cartridges never work right. The color cartridges come out only using the magenta. It makes no sense. We gave up on buying refill kits and we buy the refurbished cartridges that are a little cheaper than the new one. (Walmart carries them) My advice-don't waste the time and money on the refill kits. They usually don't work. Plus if they leak it may mess up your printer.

ebayauctionguy...I'm not sure I can post the name of the guy I bought the cartidges from, so you can email me at [email protected]
if you want to know. These come sealed and are really just like the originals. Let me know, cramer

I have been using the refill kits for over a year now. I also have heard horror stories from close friends. This is what I have been able to figure out on them. I only refill them IMMEDIATELY when the color looks faint or gone. Never after it's been sitting for awhile. If I try to refill a cartridge that has been sitting dry for some time, it doesnt print right at all. Doesnt fill right, leaks forever etc.

Another thing I do Is fill it LESS than what the MFGer says to fill it. I start by filling it just a little bit. Then I shake it, leave it upside down or sideways for a short time and fill it a little bit more. By now, I can kind of tell how much the cartridges will hold. After I let them sit for about 15 - 20 minutes, I turn them upside down in a little glass. Small glass so the bottom is just hanging there and is not touching anything. I'll let it sit for about 5 - 10 minutes, If it doesnt drip, I am goood to go. NEVER PUT A REFILLED CARTRIDGE THAT IS STILL DRIPPING INK BACK IN YOUR PRINTER. YOU CAN RUIN YOUR PRINTER. iF IT SEEMS TO DRIP FOR DAYS, YOU REFILLED IT TOO MUCH.

The cartridges my printer uses seem to be good for only a certain amount of refills before I need to go out and get a brand new one.

Don't know if this is going to work for anyone else. It works for me.

Well you all are talking about something I know about.

I have been refilling black ink cartridges for years. Long before anyone ever heard of any such thing as kits. The trick is getting the correct ink. (Inks vary considerable)
Here is an outfit I recommend.

S. A. S. INDUSTRIES, INC
3091 N Bay Dr
North Bend OR 97459
Phone 541 756 2508 1 800 245 4657

When you call know your printer numbers etc. They will walk you through it all. If you tend to be a klutz get someone else to refill as spilled ink can be a BIG problem.

As to color cartridges I have no experience. I seldom do color and buy my cartridges at a discount. Try Radio Shack for discounted cartridges.

A lot depends upon the printer & how the cartridge is refilled. I have a HP & most of the refill kits want you to punch a hole in the top to refill it.

I found a company that has an adapter that allows you to refill the black HP cartridge at the nozzles.

I have one black cartgidge I've refilled 8 times now & still works great.

Sparkz,

I have a old Dot Matrix here, too. I love it. Especially the $6.00 yard sale
price with two ribbons and a cable and junk printer just like it that I stole
a couple parts off of to make it just like new. Well, almost. Sure saves
wear and tear on my other two cartridge printers.
