Someone showed me a strange problem and I'm hoping someone here has a clue. Their PC can connect to AOL and download their mail. However, it can not connect to ANY web site. It can not ping any web site by name or IP. I uninstalled AOL and re-installed Win98 from the CD. I then tried an ISP that does not require any software, just a DUN connection. We got the same results. The ISP confirmed that the connection looks normal at their end. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Check the "Use Proxy server" box and make sure it is unchecked with no IP in the other boxes.

This one possible problem....

that doesn't sound like a modem problem...it shouldn't connect even for email if it is the modem.

I am sure you have checked the security level on the software.

sorry, not of much help.

I wouldn't suspect the modem but I'd be real curious about my browser's
connection settings. You never know though.

When you say ping did you mean ping from a client program or the
command line ping?

If you have another "extra" hard drive laying around try loading just Win98
on it and then reconnecting. Win98 is pretty good for "trying things" if you
have the extra hard drive. Even a flakey drive works for testing stuff.

Anyway it goes I'd love to hear the rest of this.

Thanks for the suggestions. Yes, I pretty much eliminated the modem as a problem. This person does work which requires that they connect to agencies such as Motor Vehicles via modem and it is working for all of these. Only the web isn't working.

I checked IE and saw nothing out of the ordinary in the connections. What security settings would lock out every single site? And I tried pinging from the DOS command box and couldnt ping anyone (except 127.0.0.1 of course). I couldnt even ping the ISP to which it was connected.

It seems to be a TCP/IP problem. Open up the network and make sure all TCP/IP settings are correct or if it is even installed.

This is a standalone machine. Under the dialup connection, TCP/IP is the only thing enabled (netbui is turned off) and log into network is NOT checked, which is how this same dialup is set on other machines which do work. What else should I look at?
thanks.

Also open up dial-up networking, right click the ISP, click on server types, make sure that the "Log on the network","NetBEUI" ,"IPX/SPX" check boxes are all OFF.

Go into IE Tools and check the security settings there.... see if they are the same as those that are working.

Check the history settings under IE and if it has a high setting, clear the history and set it to 30 days.

The inability to ping under DOS points to a network or TCP/IP setting.

I reinstalled win98 completely but I did it on top of the existing one. Is there a way to uninstall and reinstall just tcpip? Its been a long time since I used win98.

Post all the protocols listed there.

Is this by any chance AOL 5.0? If it is there is a problem with 5.0 and they would have to uninstall it or upgrade.

The system worked and it had AOL 4.0 on it. THey upgraded to 8 and that's when the problems started. So I removed 8, reinstalled windows 98 and then tried with a different ISP only to find that it didnt work. So I think that AOL screwed something up. Now its a matter of recovery.

If you're getting a connection to aol and can open mail, just not web, try deleting the aol adapter. Sometimes it gets corrupted.
If you've tried other isp software thru dun and get your handshake, maybe IE is corrupted -- but I assume you uninstalled aol entirely and re-installed and that should have overwritten any files.

geez, aol has like the largest help department ever (having been a former aol junkie myself) And if you get the right techie they can usually fix it in a few.

I've had problems with AOL like that before and what they usually recommended was dumping the tcp/ip or whatever and rebooting and if that didn't fix it, then to reinstall aol. Back up the address book first though!

thanks for all the suggestions. based on everything I tried, a local techie just said it's definitely tcp/ip related and it was probably caused by the aol adapter installed during installation.

yes, aol has a large tech department and the right techie can help. the problem is that for every good techie, they have ten lousy ones who blame the computer or the modem. I have wasted countless hours proving to people that there was nothing wrong with their hardware. usually adding a new dialup connection that bypassed aol did the trick. this one was a bit more complicated.

How much do you know about the modem itself? In other words, is it a fairly new one that you have the documentation on and are 100% positive that it supports both 56k protocols, or is it an older one that was purchased during the protocol standard decision period? I had a similar problem and it drove me crazy. I could log onto Vendio with no problem, but could not connect with the server to upload pictures. I discovered it was a flex model that had not been upgraded.

From what I understand AOL 6.0 and higher will take over your computer and not let you use another ISP.
So even if you did an uninstall there may be some files left stoping you from connecting with someone else.

Go to: start/find/files and folders/
search for AOL.
It should show all the AOL files in your computer.

Get rid of them if you can!

Thanks for all your help.
THis is what I have discovered. AOL installs its own dial up adapter and takes over the one that windows installs. Even after getting rid of aol or reinstalling windows, the old dial up adaptor never
gets bound with TCPIP. I will have to remove AOLs adaptor, uninstall and
reinstall the Windows dialup adapter and then make sure that TCPIP is bound to
it and that should solve the problem.
I have spent countless hours fixing
problems AOL has caused for many people. They are the lousiest service and
the most expensive. I cant understand why people use them.

If you are now using an ISP instead of AOL call the tech support of that ISP and they should beable to help you. This is one reason I don't us AOL. My ISP is teriffic and when major problems occur I call them and they set me straight.
