I have a bidder who is also a seller of the same type item she bid on, threatening to leave me a negative feedback if I do not cancel a bid she placed on one of my ads. She e-mailed me and said that she no longer wanted the item but that she would not retract the bid "because it will go against me." She further said, "Are you so afraid that you will not sell this item since I am the only bidder?"

I checked her history and she has placed 15 bid retractions in the past 6 months.

She said in her last e-mail to me, "If I am forced to to buy this item against my wishes I will leave you negative feedback."

My questions are:

1.) Does a bid retraction by a seller have any impact on the seller's e-bay standing?

2.) How many bid retractions by a buyer does e-bay allow?

I have no problem with not selling to her but are their any ramifications to me.

Your imput is greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure how many are actually "allowed". It doesn't seem like ebay puts down a set number, but it does say this: eBay will thoroughly investigate bid retractions. Abuse of this feature may result in the suspension of your account.

I personally would not retract her bid. That's just me though. I would keep all the emails she had sent me, and if she were to leave you a negative feedback, turn her in for excessive bid retractions, and harrassing emails. ANd if they actually do anything about it, you can try and get the neg removed. Plus, you can give her a neg right back for NPB.

Just my thoughts.

Oh, and this is where I got that quote http://pages.ebay.com/help/buy/bid-retract.html

For sure turn her into ebay for auction interference. It is obvious that this person is bidding on other competitors items just to get bidders on her own items then cancels the bids directing potential buyers to her own. 15 bid retractions should raise a red flag.

Also forward the threatening e-mail to ebay with full headers.

Maybe you should post that person here. Warn us against that slime and so we can block her as well.

Stonecold...My thoughts exactly. Not only is bid retraction abuse involved, but possibly auction interference if she sells similar items and definitely feedback extortion. It could also be a reincarnated NPB playing games. In any event, report her and block her from any further bidding. I wouldn't refund her a dime. I'd look forward to filing for fvf and trading feedback with her if she doesn't get booted first. It sounds like she may be on the verge of suspension for one more fvf, hence the threats in desperation.

Cancel the bid immediately. Report the complete circumstances to eBay.

What's her eBay handle so I can add her to my Blocked Bidder List?

I would tell her that if she wants to retract the bid, she has to do so.

I would also tell her that if she didn't and gave a negative, that I would report her to to ebay for feedback extortion and auction interference, and that if you report her, she might be suspended from ebay. Sounds like the kind of person that you have to hit back just as hard. I bet you get an apology from her if you do that.

When a bid is removed by a seller, it is a bid cancellation.

When a bid is removed by a bidder, it is a bid retraction.

The distinction is important because those are two different links on the Site Map page.

Sellers can cancel as many bids as they like without fear of eBay administrative retribution. I frequently cancel the bids of people who need an eBay seller to use as a punching bag or who think they can bully me into modifying my TOS to suit them. Stated reason is "seller's discretion"; sellers are not required to be more specific.

I was wondering when somebody was going to get around to stating the cancel/retraction difference.

Leave it to fluffy to clarify.

Just wanted to give you an update on this. I did not retract her bid and fortunately she was not the winning bidder. Actually got a winning bid higher than I ever have for this particular item.

She did send me 2 more e-mails with essentially the same threats etc. I will be forwarding all of her e-mails to E-Bay this morning.

Interestingly, she made 2 more bid retractions on other sellers just yesterday.

I have been watching what she was bidding on and every single bid she had placed was the same type of item she wanted to retract from me. And of course, they are exactly the same brand and type that she is also selling.

Many thanks to all for your comments - you are all great and I really apprecaite it. I will let you know when I hear back from E-Bay.

Judy
