Night before last my sister in FL calls me and says, "I have an ebay question for you" ... long story short as i'm able: they created an ebay account name, shopped for a computer, read a lot of good feedback on this one guy who had "12" certain computers available ... they did BIN $500 which took them to the next page, referring to payment with credit card at paypal, they did the back browser to reread some info, scrolled down and accidently hit 'buy it now' again to go "forward" to the page they had progessed to, and DOH! bought "2" of the 'puters ... i told her to go to the auction page and find the 'ask seller a question' link and explain their newbieness and i said if he's really nice, he will let you off the hook and guide you through paying for one of them, but will maybe want them to cough up the listing/fvf fee for the 2nd one ... they were out at a relatives house when they did this mistake and had called me; ...they went ahead and did an email to the seller ... ... ... by the time they got home that nite, the seller had called and left mssg. ... my bro-in-law called him back ... the guy 'seemed' pretty nice and told them, jokingly, or half/jokingly? that maybe they should'nt be buying computers on ebay! ... anyway, he told them to pay for BOTH computers through paypal, and that he would refund their credit card for one of them. .... what do you all think about that? i would think he would have them only pay for one of them, and them bill them for his restocking process for the 'other' one ... things that make me go hmmmm

No no no...my gut feeling is NO DONT PAY FOR THE SECOND COMPUTER! There are other ways to handle it...seller dying for another PayPal fee charge or what??? Sounds fishy...

*I* think it sounds fishy too ... and for the time being, it's too late, because they already did the paypals ... this was all sunday nite ... seller told bro-in-law he will ship one computer on tuesday [that's today] ............... i keep thinkin' "well they used a credit card, so they can always do a chargeback if necessary", but then they might have a possibly shifty seller saying,"here's proof i shipped" ... i just don't know WHAT to think about this ... i won't rest easy till i hear the seller credited back the one payment. ....

The seller can be as shifty as he pleases but he has already lost the case. You bro in law has an email from said seller stating that he would refund the second computer.

There should be no way that the solution is to pay for both computers and get a refund. That's a big red flag. They shold tell the seller they wil pay for one of them as it was an honest mistake.

If the seller will not go along with that then your relatives can start a new ebay account with a free email account and a credit card since it was a new account anyway.

First thing I would like to ask iw why are people buying computers on eBay. With all the bad sellers that is one catagory I would stay away from. Computers are cheap..Circut City you can buy a Compaq for $499.00 and there is no shipping charge. I am sure if you waited a little longer it might even be on sale. I checked about a month and a half ago. Flat screen TV was $89.00. Compaq hard drive $399.00 after rebates. Then scanners are cheap. Maybe the camera around $200.00.
Shipping free...Carry it home plug it in get an ISP and your good to go. Dell even has good buys from their website so my question is why buy a computer off of eBay???

To late for your brother-in-law. I hope everything works out okay...

Hi there, Libra ... yes, I agree, ... I personally would much rather buy a computer system at a local store than on the internet.

Half my family members balk at ever having to USE a computer for anything. ... I have a sister-in-law who once said to me, "I been thinkin' about having a bunch of t-shirts made that read, 'I'm computer illiterate, and proud of it!' Don't you think those would sell well?" ... I replied to her, "not on eBay"

Cheryl - you are assuming that a $499 Best Buy model is the equivalent of what the brother in law purchased. When I bought my Mac laptop, first off all, you could not get them in the stores, there was a 2 month waiting list on them. I bought mine on ebay, had it Fed-exed to me and and still paid $250 less than what they were retailing for. For every bad seller in the computer area there are 100 great ones. I regularly purchase new parts and add ons for my computer from ebay. Last month I purchased a 185 Gig external hard drive for $125 - much less than what they are from any of the computer stores. I paid on Wednesday, It arrived on Friday. with a 800 number of the seller in case I had install problems. As long as you do the reasearch, there is no reason 10-20% more for your computer needs.

Aint - Since the info was on the phone, not in email your brother is going to need another CYA venue, I would suggest having him draw up a statement from the carrier stating that the package in question only only contains one computer. When it is delivered or he goes to pick it up, whatever the case may be, have the shipping company employee wait while he opens it and sign the letter. Also save the shipping label with weight listed then employ a notary for a signed and notorized statemnt attesting to package weight and contents. It's kind of a PITA but for $500 it's worth the extra effort.

BTW - if he is picking up, have him go during a slow period so that he can sob story the clerk without stressing the people in line

LOL... hi fenix... i just copy/pasted your thoughts on his covering his butt and emailed that to him ... i was surprised to quickly get a reply: "We have talked with him and there is no problem. He said he would let ebay know we mutually agreed to cancel the one order and he would refund any funds they send him.
Thanks for all your help Grandma.
Eric"

[he is referencing that his wife and I both became the first grandmas in our big clan, both of us a week apart, early in August] ... .......... but what he wrote doesn't really cover the situation of having paid for 2 computers, so i told him we're just watching out for them, and to keep an eye on the WHOLE transacting till he gets his other $500 back. ...

Question, Did he make 1 paypal pymt for both auctions or did he make them separate???

Seller wrote he would refund any funds they send him., Does that mean if ebay sends seller 3.00 dollar refund that is what he will send to your bro-in-law??? That is the way I read it ???

I would not have paid for the 2nd auction, mistake #1.

Good advice from Fenix03
I would have 2 witness's and the person who made the delivery. Not relatives either.

Good luck and Please keep us informed

hi wrights ... the way *I* read it is my brother-in-law doesn't really know how to word what he's trying to say to me ... i *do* think he's trying to tell me he has the gut feeling it will all work out alright, having spoken to the seller ... the only thing i think might make him right on his gut feeling, is that they said they knew to shop for a big ticket item from someone with A LOT of good feedback, which they "said" this seller has. ... on one hand, they ask me for advice during their blooper night, over the phone .... on the other hand, they ARE total newbies, and I wonder exactly what the seller's feedback number/ratio is. ... i'm tempted to ask bro-in-law 'SHOW ME THE ITEM NUMBER SO I CAN CHECK THIS GUY OUT', but they've not offered that to me as of yet, and i don't want to be TOO intrusive [i feel like that would almost be like asking the tabu question, 'how much money do you make'] LOL ... .... oh believe me, i'll come tell y'all if them two Floridians come crying to me next month.

That makes no sense to pay for 2 and get refunded. I would either pay for 1 or 0, but not two...

Did he make 2 PayPal payments or one?

If he made a seperate PayPal payment for each computer, then the seller would have to provide a seperate tracking number for EACH payment to be covered in case of a complaint.
