My morning paper has an article that says that another SoBig is due in the middle of September. It will come as an email attachment. It can be on any attachment sent by spammers. AOL says that out of 31 million emails with attachments, 13 million had some type of virus & 11.5 million had the sobig worm. Lesson to learned; Don't open attachments & keep your Ant-Virus up to date.

"Lesson learned; Don't open attachments & keep your Ant-Virus up to date."

does that mean the same as don't download any attachment?, or are you saying don't even open the email to read body of message ... ... i know that question has been often asked here before [and it seems there are conflicting points of view on this?] ....

I think different email programs display messages in different ways. Example; mine show the message when I click on the header, but the attachment is displayed as a paperclip. I have to click on the paperclip to see the attachment. I just stopped opening the attachment.

There is a fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."

Max; that is the same as mine. Most emails will tell you that there is an attachment If in doubt don't open it at all.

I've been getting alot of e-mails with attachments, I'm sure they are all viruses. I just delete them all.

Also keep your Windows XP updated with the latest patches.

One of the computers I use is an older 486 with Windows 3.1 which I use primarily for editing, storing and uploading my images to Vendio. Any email I am suspicious of, I open on that machine. It's immune to viruses written for 32 bit machines, and there hasn't been a 16 bit virus written in years.

OUTLOOK EXPRESS 6, which comes with XP, has a SECURITY feature that automatically EXCLUDES attachments -- they can't be opened!

GOTO: TOOLS >> OPTIONS >> SECURITY >> check the box "Do not allow attachments which may contain viruses..."

tomwill; if you are using Aol for email even if you have XP, you are open for a worm.

so far, the only thing that's saved my ass is that I work on a mac, and SoBig and the blaster virus can't run on them. I know I went to a website last week, and got a message saying "IE has detected (whatever the virus' name is that became blaster) hit okay to isolate and delete it)
I couldn't be sure if it were a javascript message or an actual error box from the IE program itself, but I'd never seen a message like it before. I'm sure that if I were on Windows i'd be toast, because it wasn't my quick wits that saved me.

Good thought. I wonder how many people realize that for not very much money they could move their email function to a machine that is immune to PC viruses.

Since email (thanks to Microsloth's continuing reluctance to produce quality software) is usually the entrance point for viruses, it only makes good sense to isolate that function.

I do mail on my Titanium PowerBook. I have a Windows XP laptop but it never sends or receives mail.

If I didn't have a bunch of Macs already I would pick up one of the original Bondi iMacs or the iMac DV, used, for a couple hundred dollars. You don't need a Pentium 4-class machine to read and compose email.

Here is a virus that my virus protection stopped this morning. W32/Bugbear.b.dam Is this a new one? My virus protection is from my ISP so they never get into my mail box. Thank Goodness....
