I'm curious how many sellers stick to shipping only to "Confirmed Addresses" with PayPal to comply with their "Seller Protection Policy". I've been doing this for about two years. I even note this in BIG Black letters in my auctions and I'm getting more and more bidders upset that I won't ship to some other address. I tell them no, and threaten to either not buy(costing me fees) or to file negative feedback on me when they just don't pay attention to the auction.
I'd like to hear how others handle this.

Thanks,
Dan (danmcd)

I ship to unconfirmed addresses all the time and knock on wood no problems yet but I truly believe it's a choice a seller has to make on their on....If it's High dollar stuff I'd say no.

I ship to unconfirmed PP addys too but always wonder the stuff the sellers with the 'no unconfirmed Paypal addresses allowed' phrases in their TOS must endure.
I know that I would lose a lot of sales and repeat buyers with the condition in my TOS but on the other hand, if I had a $100+ sale I doubt that I would send the item to a PP user with an unconfirmed PP address.

All depends on how much yer willing to EAT!! ??

ALL they have to do is say to PP: "Me never got nuttin!" and PP will IMMEDIATELY swipe the moola from yer account, and...

YOU HAVE NOOOOO RECOURSE!

And...

It be yer fault for ASSUMING THE RISK in the first place!

MY tos says to CONFIRMED ADDRESSES ONLY, but I do case by case -- $10 item, who cares??!!

$331 plate goes to a CONFIRMED ADDRESS with SIGNATURE CONFIRMATION...ONLY1

As a buyer, I always ask permission to use an unconfirmed address if I know something is NOT going to be sent USPS (my confirmed address is a PO box). I've never had anyone turn me down and request a different method of payment, but as a seller I agree with tomwiii--depends on the dollar amount. (BTW tom, big congrats on the plates! I was watching 'em just like everyone else!)

What I did one time (when I was buying a lot of different items) was to temporarily change the address on my credit card to my street address, and then THAT'S the one that would show up as confirmed. When I was done with my buying spree, I changed my credit card back to the PO box.

We ship to unconfirmed, too. If I had the plates Tom did, I'd only ship them to confirmed with return receipt with their signature.... you bet!

Hello
Guess I will weigh in on this one. About 70-80 percent of my buyer are pay pal unconfirmed. (Large percentage Non-USA) I try to clean out the pay pal account daily when I am in the busy season as I have many PP payments. I use USPS either insured USA or registered non-USA if is something I am not willing to eat. Their are no sure fire method, however my losses are very low. On low end items ($25 or less to me) I self insure (Meaning I eat it if buyer says lost).

That said you WILL have some losses sometime just a matter of how much time you are willing to hassles the buyer/Postal authorities over a loss. I just weight my loss $ against sales and as long is very low I try not to sweat it. (Though at times that is hard)........

I ship to unconfirmed adresses frequently (more often than to confirmed) both domestic and international. In over 5000 transactions with PayPal I have never had a problem except once and in that case it was a confirmed address with an eDC claiming non receipt of a small item. I deal in a unique niche market and many of my buyers are repeats (over 2/3rds have purchased before). I believe a lot has to do with what you are selling and who you sell to. I do redline certain countries however I will not deal with Indonesia, Nigeria or any of the various former Russian states.

Are you covered if you send to an unconfirmed address and you put a eDC on it?
Alot of my buyers have unconfirmed address and I still send them. I don't understand why PayPal doesn't make everyone confirmed. It seems odd to me that they can use PayPal with an unconfirmed address..

Hi. I've shipped unconfirmed also and so far, no problems. As a buyer, I've asked the seller to ship to family members for me,
so I can understand it. Seems others have their work or home address as one confirmed and not the other. Guess you have to check their history, but as others have said, on high items would probably NOT make the exception either.

As a side bar, I happened to see paypal's new TOS today and thought I would post in case some are not aware of the cash back reward change for the paypal card.

Apparently you will now have to insert the preferred paypal method of payment logo in all your auctions in order to quality for the 1.5% cash back on the card. This starts after September 26th.

PayPal Preferred Rewards / 1.5% Cashback Change

Notice Date: August 21, 2003 (updated August 25, 2003)
Effective Date: September 26, 2003
Starting on September 26, 2003, there will be two new requirements to receive 1.5% cashback on PayPal ATM / Debit Card purchases. The new requirements are as follows:
Maintain an active PayPal Premier or Business account
Have the PayPal Preferred on eBay preference turned on.
PayPal Preferred on eBay is a new feature that will be available to eBay Sellers at the end of September. This feature gives eBay sellers the ability to indicate to their buyers that they prefer PayPal. Buyers will see through participating sellers' listings that the sellers prefer PayPal.

Once the PayPal Preferred feature on eBay is available at the end of September, you will be able to turn it on from the PayPal website (click on the Auctions Link within the Profile tab) or from your Payment Preferences within My eBay.

These new requirements are in addition to the existing requirements to receive 1.5% cashback:
Obtain and activate a PayPal MasterCard ATM/Debit Card.
Have a valid eBay user ID and password registered with PayPal.
List on eBay at the rate of at least one item every three weeks.
Show PayPal in all of your eBay listings as the only online payment option that you advertise.
Sellers who do not meet these new and existing requirements will be disqualified from receiving 1.5% cashback on purchases. Disqualified users will have the opportunity to re-qualify by meeting all of the listed requirements.

Thanks for posting that. I use my PP debit card for everything. It's nice to get some cash back.

I ship to unconfirmed addresses. There have been a couple of instances where I didn't feel comfortable with doing that so I didn't. When I buy something on Ebay, I want it sent to my work address which is where I spend the majority of my time. Things ending up on my front porch are liable to disappear before I get home. Most sellers understand this. However, if it is stated in the auction that they will only ship to confirmed addresses, I email the seller prior to bidding to ask if they will ship to my work address. It would be nice if my buyers would do the same thing, but they never do.

I have shipped to unconfirmed addresses. Haven't had any trouble. However, I play it by ear. Must admit, though that I do feel more secure when I ship to "confirmed address".

As for myself, I have a confirmed address. From this buyer's perspective I think it helps me to have a better relation with the sellers.

If I should use an unconfirmed address, I would ask permission.

Yes, and one may NEVER have a problem!

The point is: if you ship to an UNCONFIRMED ADDRESS and the bidder sqawks, you have NO recourse with PayPal whatsoever!

That's why I play it by ear: little orders me don't even blink...BIG orders ship to CONFIRMED addresses in the USA ONLY!

If you ship to an unconfirmed address with insurance, and the buyer claims they did not get it (even if DC says delivered), can you file a claim?

The PayPal SELLER PROTECTION PLAN is easy & straight forward...ALL of the conditions have to be met to qualify:

What is the Seller Protection Policy?

Sellers will not be held liable for chargebacks due to fraud (including payments made with stolen credit cards and false claims of non-shipment) when they follow the rules of our Seller Protection Policy:

The seller has a Verified U.S. or Canadian Business or Premier Account

PLUS:

The seller ships to the buyer's Confirmed Address.

PLUS:

The seller ships within 7 days of receiving payment.

PLUS:

The seller can provide reasonable proof-of-shipment which can be tracked online. This document must show that you shipped to the buyer's Confirmed Address. For items valued at $250 or more, you must include a signature from the recipient as proof of receipt.

PLUS:

The seller ships tangible goods. Since comparable widely-accepted proof-of-shipment methods are not currently available for intangible goods and services, we are currently unable to offer Seller Protection for digital goods and other electronically-delivered items.
The seller accepted a single payment from one PayPal account for a purchase.

PLUS:

The seller shipped to a domestic (U.S.) buyer at a U.S. address.

When a complaint occurs, sellers need to provide complete information within 7 days of a request from PayPal. However, if PayPal is required by the credit card association to respond immediately to resolve a chargeback, sellers must provide the information within 3 days. PayPal will indicate the response time required in the email message sent to the seller.
Please review our Buyer Complaint Policy to learn the specific terms and conditions of the Buyer Complaint Process.

Note: If you ship to a non-U.S. Verified member, it is not the same as shipping to a U.S. Verified member, and you will not be covered by the PayPal Seller Protection Policy.

(my bold anf PLUS added)

Seth: if you ship to an UNCONFIRMED ADDRESS, PayPal will ignore you & yank the moola out of your account if the buyer files a non-delivery complaint!

THAT HAS NOTHING to do with insurance!

There's a time to insist on a confirmed shipping address and a time when it isn't important. I like to think most sellers know the difference, but I'll admit some are clueless. The other day I saw a seller selling cheap VHS tapes and his TOS said PayPal payments must include a confirmed shipping address, no exceptions. I can't imagine what the fraud rate is on thieves scamming sellers for a $3.00 VHS tape of "The Beverly Hillbillies," but I'd be willing to accept the risk on shipping something like that to an unconfirmed shipping address.

Then at the other end of the spectrum there's Clueless-Carl shipping a high end laptop to a zero feedback buyer in Indonesia or Romania on receipt of a PayPal payment. Of course PayPal is to blame when such a transaction goes bad.

Ok, dumb question time. I ship to "unconfirmed addresses" all the time and, so far, have had no problems. Is an address "unconfirmed" when it differs from the address shown on the credit card?

Hey, Sinatra Peepers!

It's EASIER just to look at the PP transaction!

EVERY PayPal transaction record INDICATES plainly whether or not the address is CONFIRMED or UN-CONFIRMED!

Simple as choking-on-a-pretzel!

I think it's according to what your selling.
Most everything I sell is under 10.00 & I usually have duplicates, so it doesn't matter to me, confirmed or unconfirmed.

If it's a one of a kind & over 50.00, I would have to think about it.

As far as I know, the way PayPal confirms an address is to verify it with the credit card you have on file. I don't know if you can verify an address if you only have a checking account linked since I started out with both checking and credit card. That may be why there are so many people with unconfirmed addresses out there--no credit card linked!

Thanks, Lurky...that's what I suspected. Like I said, I haven't had any problems with shipping to unconfirmed addresses...but then again, I don't recall ever sending any really expensive items to them either. Unfortunately, most of the items I sell aren't "really expensive"...more's the pity!
