No it didn't - it sent you to a payment form to pay your seller. You have to enter your paypal email account and password which puts you into your account so that you can make payment to the seller.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

shabinitup,
I know. It freaked me out the first time it happened to me long ago. It is an invoice from Paypal that opens in a new browser window (on my computer anyway) with the seller's name at the top that will be paid. I used to always go directly to the Paypal home page instead, use "Send Money" and tediously enter all the auction data. But when this invoice pops up, you are actually in Paypal's website.
The automatic invoice is easy and faster, and equally secure. But I always look at the web address after I land on it and make sure it's actually a Paypal address in secure mode. (starts with "https" instead of "http" ).
Also, when you pay from one of these invoices, you are required to enter your Paypal password, and technically are logged into your Paypal account. When I get to the last screen after paying, instead of just closing the browser or hitting the "back" button or clicking on "go back to Ebay" or whatever that says, I click on the button at the bottom that says "continue". It will take you to your regular Paypal screen for your account. Like I said, you are already logged into it. I log out of Paypal, then go about my business.
All my precautions may not be necessary, but do provide additional security.
