What exactly is a "tiki"? It seems that whenever I mention "tiki" in my auctions I get multiple bids on otherwise ordinary postcards. I don't want to abuse the term so I'd like to make SURE before I list I have a "tiki" and not some other thing.

Thanks for help!

PS: is the wooden object in the foreground in this postcard a "tiki"? (from Tahition Motor Lodge in FL)

well neglus, I am not Ihula but that looks like a tiki to me.

something to keep your eyes open for...

many Tiki restaurants had pottery pieces made specicifically for them....

we had a Kahiki restaurant in Cols. Ohio and I found a very weird bowl (which I put a picture of here) that said "made for Kahiki, Cols Oh" on the bottom.

that thing sold for $83.00! even though it was damaged! The buyer was delighted to get it for his collection.

I am still kicking myself though, I passed up a set of the mugs at the same sale.

I know I'm not ihula, but I'm really familiar with Hawaii (I grew up there)

Tikis are just statues of Polynesian gods usually wood or stone.

In your pic, the big brown thing in amongst the plants just left of center looks like the backside of a tiki. I don't recall the behinds having such definition though...

I remember in the early sixties that Hawaiian stuff was the rage, especially mini wooden tikis worn around the neck. Back there there was also the 'Hawaiian Eye' TV show and it was very popular.

I feel so needed
Yep, that's a big old tiki butt. Tiki's can come in many shapes, sizes and designs depending on the artist who carves/creates them. Tiki's are making a come back (Hawaiiana in general is) so definately mention tiki in the description.
Good Luck!
