Just got back from one of my favorite places, Millersburg, OH where I picked up this very large vase for a whopping $18.00. It stands 17" high and is 32-1/2" in diameter at the widest. I do know that it is 1940's deco and is blown cased glass in perfect condition. The color is not raspberry as it appears in the photos, but is more of a deep rose or cranberry color. Any clues as to who the maker may be? Help!!! Since the outer layer of glass forms the design, would this be considered cameo?

Would appreciate any help.

Cheryl

Hi Cheryl,
IMHO it's modern and not cased glass, but clear glass that is painted inside. Don't put water in it.

There is a fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."

It is not painted on the inside. It is blown (I believe mold blown with a flat pontil) and cased (I trust the dealer that grabbed it for me without question). He bought a colonial basket (huge - believed to be an apple picking basket) for $60 from this shop. He did the happy dance all the way home because the thing is worth hundreds. I'm kicking myself for not buying the large Weller vase for $25.

I'm not certain but I think I remember these in department stores within the past decade or so, usually near where they sold silk flowers for arrangements. But I could be wrong.

Hi,

Well, when I first saw the picture I didn't think it was cased but I'm not an expert so waited to post my thoughts.

To me, cased glass is two or more layers of different colors blown over one another. Some pieces I've seen have the top layer cut through to the one underneath.

Your vase looks to me as though the outer clear layer was molded in the design, as opposed to the design being cut through to the lower layer.

So, IMHO, it's not cased glass. The design looks modern to me, not 40s.

Very pretty piece.

Clear glass, which is the top layer + colored glass = 2 layers of different colored glass. Cut through = cameo glass. This isn't cameo glass. That I know. It was mold blown. Like I said, the dealer who found it for me is an expert although not in glass. I did take it to a local woman I know who collects glass last night. It is cased glass. It is not modern in the sense that it was made within the last 10 years. It was made in the 1940's maybe early 1950's. I guess having the piece to hold and touch makes a difference. She is now researching to see if she can find its maker. Thanks for your help.

PS If any of you collect Fiesta, her collection would literally knock your socks off. She lives in an old restored Victorian and has converted the nursery into a Fiesta room. The shapes and colors are amazing. Walking through her house I feel like a bull in a china shop. I left my swinging purse at the door.

Just wanted you to know that I have 10 of these in my barn. I purchased them in 1995 from Wal-Marts and I paid $6.00 each for them. We have them in blue, yellow, green and other colors. I bought them when I had my antique shop (before Hurricane Floyd). I thought they were beautiful and would eventually go up in value. Yours may be older but mine are an exact replica of this one. Don't know if this helps or not and I am not sayng that yours isn't old but perhaps mine are reproductions of what you have.
