I can not believe this.

I search Ebay user id's every once in a while for fun, and to see what names I can find that are available.

I have found some super names in the past, and even registered a few for safe keeping, but I found one last night that was too good to pass up.

I changed my main user ID to this new user ID.

I was in the process of changing my PayPal ID to the new name, and I get a warning that I can not add this new name to my PayPal account because someone else has it registered to them.

I send an email to PayPal, middle of the night, and end up calling them this morning.

What do they tell me.

Even if the person, or company does not own the EBay name anymore, PayPal can not take the Ebay User Name off someone's account.

They said it will stay associated with the other person's account unless the other person has the desire to log in to their account and remove it.

Now, I can not change my user ID back. Nor can I use PayPal Post Sale, or advanced features with this account unless this other person decides to remove this name from their list.

Go Figure.

I don't understand. I've never had to register my ebay ID with paypal to receive payments.

You haven't changed your email have you?

As long as your email is the same you should be able to receive payments without a problem.

Are you talking about the name you register with paypal that appear on the buyers credit card statement?

If that's the problem just leave off the last letter of the name or add a number.

Actually, it is not a huge problem for me.

If I wanted to use PayPal automatic invoicing it would be a problem, or if I wanted to use PayPal Post Sale Manager, it would be a problem.

Also, you know how PayPal can add payment buttons and logos to your account.

If you want them to add these logos, payment buttons, etc. then you have to register your Ebay account with them so you they can go in your auctions and add it.

Also, being PayPal preferred is conditional on an Ebay presence, which is probably verified through the registered user ID. (Gives 1.5% cash back on PayPal Debit Card Purchases)

So although it will not keep me from receiving money, there are complications.

It seems strange that PayPal claims no authority to take a USER ID off an account, when that USER ID does not belong to that PayPal User.

I may not fully understand the consequences of not being able to register my Ebay ID with PayPal until problems arise.

At first I thought the other person would be able to PayPal Invoice my buyers when my auctions end, but I believe he would have to know my Ebay User ID for that to happen.
