I have a 7" dia x 1/2" thick clear resin disc, filled with petrified wood chips. There are 7 unequal height sections of petrified wood embedded around the bottom edge. There's a piece of red felt on the bottom (center). A small foil label is on the bottom and says "genuone petrified wood". The top is very shiny and rather attractive.
I'll try to post an image

What is this?

It looks a lot like this auction. Ebay Item 3251698160
It is an ash tray, but yours is missing the center ashtray piece.

'cuz no one told you, here is how you make a link to a pic on this board:
instead of using <img source=.......> put [$img]http://www.imagehost.vendio.com/preview/bl/blbrd/.thumbs/PetrifiedWood2.jpg[/img]
Remember to remove the $ sign.
Vendio doesn't use the traditional html. For a link to a site, replace the img with url.
Hope that helps and is not confusing!

Looks to me like it could hold one of those big ol' stocky candles (are they called pillar candles?).
Not lurkyloo on eBay

Here, in the Southwest, these type of items are found in souvenir shops. They are used for a variety of 'holdings', such as the candle holder (votive or pillar) and ashtray suggested above. I've also seen them with small crystal/glass bowls for ring holders and such. Larger sizes which can hold a larger bowl are also used for buffet serving pieces. Some are decorated a little more with a bird, bird's nest, pinecones, etc., in the center.
Just another way to take a piece of the pertified desert home with you -- legally.
Hope this helps a bit...

Thank you all. I appreciate you taking the time to find a similar item, to instruct on image posting, and solving the puzzle. Whatisits are interesting to discuss at get togethers, but rarely come up with answers. I hope I can return the favor sometime.
