Hi guys. Got a question if anybody knows.

Couple of months ago I bought an older toy Glo Worm ( seen them sell pretty good, blah, blah.) Well, thing is when I opened it, out came tumbling the worse corroded batteries, and of course I picked them up with my bare hands not seeing all the gook on them at first.

Well, I am now getting numbing and tingling in my hands and bad pains. Am I going off the wall with thinking its from the corroded batteries???? I searched some web sites and since I was a admin assist most of adult career - the sites all point toward carpel tunnel, arthritis, vascultis etc......but I am pretty heathly and find those things hard to believe ( and only in my early forties). Anyway.....what could happen if you get that battery stuff on your hands or in your body somehow??? I am really scared I ingested it or something.

That is not from the batteries, sounds like carpal tunnel...
comes from a repetitive motion over a period of time usually... many people get it now.

Battries are actually pretty tame now... you might of had some peeling of the skin or a burning of the skin... but it would of went away when you washed your hands...

Of course the only one that could positively tell is your doctor.

It's kinda odd timing with the batteries incident though. Usually carpal tunnel gives some warning signs. A visit to the doc or a call to the advice nurse may be in order.

Thanks. I will probably have to go to the doctor. Maybe it is carpel tunnel <shrug>.

Just lately been thinking more and more its chemicals in various things that are making us sick....and then remembered those batteries. (The stuff was so fine and even tho I washed my hands I felt like I was tasting it, too.)

I agree with Twelvepole on this one. I think you would have felt some burning on your fingers or the skin may have shown red if it went into your system.

I've touched corroded batteries and I'm still fairly normal.

If you use your mouse and keyboard often you do have the possibility of developing carpal tunnel syndrome.

Many develop arthritis in their hands and fingers at a young age and sometimes it shows up more with the cooler weather. I didn't realize how many were affected and how bad it could be until I started selling rings years ago.

What do you think makes the Glo Worm, Glo?

It's the radio active, nuclear batteries that come with them!

I worked with radioactive substance my adult life and I still don't glow in the dark. But maybe thats why my fingers are dropping off = NOT
Serious though my cataracts are bad because of that stuff and this is a pain. I am way to young to have cataracts especially this bad. It's best to leave diagnosis to the medical profession.

Well Kiara that is debatable. I think touching those made you a very knowledgeable person. If you can remember all those Righteous Bros hits it has to be something.

What you are describing with your hands sounds like carpel tunnel or maybe tendonitis. I have had both and the numbing and tingling sounds very familiar. I would expect the acid would burn your skin but I second the suggestion that you see your doctor.

Do you recall what kind of batteries they were? Nickel Cadmium, Alkaline or regular carbon zink?

Th e tingling and numbness you are feeling IS the warning signs, Neroter. Change your computer chair, change the height of your desk- change the angle your hands rest at when you type or do any other repetitive motion. It can go right away again- but if you keep it up, it will develop into CT.

I am sorry, neroter, but early forties is not too early for a woman to start seeing osteoarthritis, particularly in her hands. It afflicts women much more than men.

If you've got HMO coverage your HMO will have occupational specialists you can make an appointment with...and that person can make a determination as to cause.

I had your symptoms and was told it was carpel tunnel. I went to a chiropractor and he said it was a nerve in my shoulder that went down my arm. Some acupuncture - and I was good as new. Hope you feel better

Going to the doctor by the end of the week. (Fluffy, , I am one of those middle class Americans you read about that dont have insurance. I've gotten by so far, but this shi** with my hands! I cant afford to have this ailment. Think I'm gonna ask the big guy for a trade-in on a different one if I have to have one.....lol...

Sparkz - dont remember what batteries they were.

- Thanks all for your replies! Feel much better about the battery thing! -

Go to your local pharmacy and purchase an ACE bandage specifically for Carpal Tunnel...it is cheaper than going to the doctor and it works!

I have used it just recently and within a few days, I was AOK!

Some years ago, I started getting numbness and fatigue in my hands and was referred to a neurologist. He determined that I did not yet have carpal tunnel syndrome, but that I would benefit from more ergonomic practices in using the computer. I got one of those "split" keyboards, modified the height/placement of it on my desk, and I took more frequent breaks from typing/clicking. It took me about a week to feel fully comfortable with the keyboard, but I have used it for a long time and I love it.

Since carpal tunnel is due to repetetive motion, perhaps you could ask your doctor for some simple therapy exercises to do when you take a break from the computer. My problem gradually went away (thank goodness!), but I think you might be farther along than I was.

Good luck in beating this!! BTW my mom had surgery on both her hands about 15 years ago since she had permanent numbness in her hands and fingers in addition to bad arthritis. She eventually regained all the feeling back, but I believe that's not true for everyone.

Live in thanks. Going to walmart and get one today!

lurky...yes,years ago, I had some problems with my wrist doing bookkeeping (the back and forth on a calculator motion) but I refused to accept such a weakness in my physical self. It went away when I changed jobs.....but THIS is undeniably something! Frankly I am scared of any surgery because wonder if that only makes it worse sometimes?

But it took me about 40 mins this am of running my hands under cold water then holding hands up and down to make the numbness go away! It feels like a frostbite like my fingers are dead! But I am still going about my business today...only slower. :0-)

ps,. Who here thinks Kiara is "Normal"? lol I for one don't and wouldnt have it any other way!

Neroter, I forgot to add that I also got a mouse pad with a soft gel wrist rest. I don't know if it specifically helped the numbness, but it sure felt comfortable!! Frequent breaks will probably be your best friend for a while....

neroter12--------

Years ago after doing hair and nails for years my hands started hurting. Took so many aspirins I was throwing up blood. Anyway 5 years down the road and two $350 dollar tests (insurance didn't pay for them) I do not have carpal tunnel. Turns out I have fibromyalgia. The way your hands hurt is just like Carpal, but it affects the muscles not the nerves. The muscles get so inflamed they hurt like nerves sometimes. If you are having trouble sleeping, even when you are asleep you feel like you are awake, and staying asleep you may have it. It is like Chronic Fatigue Syndrome but instead of flu like symptoms it affects the muscles. It does tend to come on very suddenly most of the time. I hope you don't have it but many people are coming up with it. It shows up on a brain scan but that is the only physical test for it.

paws, thanks for the info. I do have some other symptons seeming to come on now and its funny u mentioned about sleeping as i have been experiencing that too! And been asprin'ing it up also. This is awful. everything you do you do with your hands! (The thought crossed my mind today as winding up like one of those paraplegics typing with one of those things from your mouth! lol. God forgive me. What a pessimist to even entertain that thought!)

But i got the wrist band today. So seems to help some...but i cant friggin type with it and of course free gallery day, so about to pull it right off.

Lurky thanks for telling me. I will try anything about now. I cant deal with this! I do notice the wrist action going on with his band in place so maybe that will help some in itself.

Neroter16--------

Do your feet also bother you at times? Do you feel stiff, swollen and pretty much like crap with you first get up in the mornings? Do your joints ache? Do you feel bone tired ALL the time but still can't sleep? Have brain fog and can't even remember your own birth date sometimes? With Fibromyalgia the hands hurt exactly like carpal. The neuro surgeon who saw me first about it just couldn't figure it out. He said "the test says no but you have the classic symptoms" and he wanted to operate. I said no thanks I'll wait until it gets worse. I'm so glad I didn't do it since it wouldn't have helped in the least.

I sure hope you don't have it. Go to google or any search engine and type in Fibromyalgia and look at some of the symptoms. You can figure out pretty quick if you have it.

By the way the hand braces make it worse. If you stay in one position too long it makes it worse. You have to move the muscles but not too much or it gets worse. It's lots of fun but I thank God it isn't any worse. Keep us posted on what you find.

Sorry to hear about the fibromyalgia! We treat people with that condition daily using massotherapy and reflexology. Seems to really help a lot. I know from talking to these people that it can be very painful.

paws, (sorry all - dont want to belabor this) but yeah, I do have all those things. The feet on and off too, but thought it was from sitting on them, etc. OMG! Now I am really scared! Always been healthy as horse my whole life! I have gained some weight and was worried it's diabetes (as that runs in my family.) I guess I was hoping it was the corroded batteries or something that could pop some pills and be 'fixed'..ya know? I've read about the fibromyalgia. They always say its hard to get a clear diagnoises on it and the symptoms mimic so many other illnesses. Like Epstein Barr, etc. I dont know what I am gonna do. But I tell ya what, I denounce this illness and I will it to take a hike from me.

But thanks paws, I will look into it when I get time...trying to list today......
Thought to myself this am: "feel like putting in the postage -- depends on where the bidding goes for this, regular if it meets my criteria for some profit; and zapped to make it that way if it dont!!......hahaha...."

Nero, did the bandage help? I even slept with it on for 2 nights.

I had to remove it to list too.

Give it a couple of days.
If you get no positive results, go to the doctor!
