This is certainly a first for me. Buyer owed $10.35 for priority shipping. He paid through Paypal but only $2.68 for shipping. I e-mailed and told him there was a problem and could he please correct it by sending another $7.67 etc. etc. He e-mailed back this cute statement:
"Hi ! Was hoping to save some money. I will send you the additional thru Paypal." Can you believe the gall?! The nerve?! Probably hoping it would slip by me.
So now I get the rest through Paypal, with (sigh) additional fees. This has been part of my Ebay tuition costs. Next time I'll refund the original payment and ask that he send it all in full, as many of you do already, I'm sure.

Roadsmith: I went to look at your auctions because I wondered why an occasional seller would need a Business or Premier PayPal account.
I noticed that you listed the Sandwich sugar/creamer set. If you can edit the auction, you might want to.
I believed it was made by Tiara for their party plan. Kiara believed it was made by Duncan and Miller. It can't possibly be both. FYI.

Fluff: I'm glad you pointed out which Paypal account I have! I have no idea why that one instead of the "regular" one. I looked at Paypal and couldn't see any further info on the differences between the various types of accounts except for getting money with no charge to me through that beginner account. Do you know if there is any downside to my dropping back to that other type? I'd hate to switch and then find out I've made a mistake.
And about the Tiara vs. Duncan & Miller set! I didn't know what to do about this because both of you had good reasons for believing it was one or the other, and even researching it further showed inconclusive results. That's why I went to the subtitle, for the first time ever. I'll just go into the auction and explain why I've listed it both ways. Thanks.

Fluff: Have you experienced any problems with buyers wanting to use credit or debit cards through Paypal for your auctions? Do you think that most buyers have funds in there already? If so, I'm ready to switch!

Fluffy: I don't think anyone has ever paid me with a cc or debit card. I do get echecks sometimes.
But, when I changed to the Premier account it was because I had a limit of $600 a year or 6 months or something like that total allowed for a personal account.
Is it now simply controlled by cc versus bank or balance? If so, I'm switching back. I pay more to Paypal than I do to Ebay each month

Lindajean: Let's research this one. I wish we could get a quick answer from Paypal. . . .

Whenever you receive a SHORT payment the first thing you are supposed to do is hit the Refund button. The buyer then resends the right amount and you only incur one charge.

I am also a sporadic seller, but when I signed up for PayPal, it seemed as though the limits on personal would have been an issue for me, as well, so I went with the higher level.
As for my payments, I always pay for my PayPal purchases via credit card. I do not keep any funds in PayPal. I may be overly concerned, but as far as I know, they are not a bank.
As for my current foray into eBay selling again, I think it is safe to assume that the purchasers of the lowest cost merchandise will cause problems far out of proportion to the amount of the sale. I am already dreading completing the sale to one person who emailed me during the auction to let me know that eBay made a mistake and entered an amount other than the one he typed, and was higher than expected (apparently didn't realize that other person's earlier bid may have had an effect on that), didn't really want to bid that much and that he would have used a different bidding strategy, won the item, but emailed me that the payment notice didn't include my address (although, oddly enough, this must be appearing, or the other people mailing me checks are using their powers of ESP). At the first contact, I suggested he just retract his bid; now I wish I had just cancelled it.

Roads, I bet what happened to you is what happened to me. You have your personal account then all of a sudden somebody sends payment with a cc and you are asked to accept or deny it and if you accept it, you are then upgraded to premier account.
I denied one lady's payment via cc and she gave me such a hard time....blah, blah, I've always used to my cc to pay before, never had this problem..if I have to send you a ck or mo...there will be a delay in shipping, I dont use my bank account with paypal....
...yada...yada...yada.....
But I was wondering if you opened a 2nd account as a personal account...could you direct your buyers to it by asking if they are paying by cc, or PP account? Thats not illegal by Paypal rules or anything is it? I need to do that....but I havent figured out how without making it an other than auction payment???

I had to refuse so many cc's that I upgraded, then the fees were on all transactions.
It sucked!
I wish they had a better fee structure.
Someday I'll have the volume...that day will come!

Nero--I have no idea at all what happened, but I'm pretty sure I originally signed up for the personal account. Oh well, so much of my payment comes in through PayPal that I guess I shouldn't complain.
I do wish we knew if there's a dollar limit, though. I spent a lot of time today trying to find that out at the Paypal site with no luck, so I sent them an e-mail. If they reply, I'll post it here.

Roads, well somebody posted here according to Paypal you CAN have one premier and ONE personal account. Which I do, but I think I am going to switch them out on auctions and if I get a cc payment, I will email them and tell them to send it to the premier one?

This last weekend I won an auction and the seller directed me to pay her "husband's" paypal account and use "other" instead of "auction"....didn't give it a second thought then, but perhaps she was trying to make certain she didnt get charged for cc (actually i paid with PP funds )...??
YIKES! Now that i think about it - what if it was a stolen id!!! DUH sometimes we do stuff without thinking! I think it was a low ticket item, but STILL!

Roads: Let me know if you hear from them.
I can't find anyone who has paid me with cc. They all say instant payment. I would love to use a personal account. But, I do get several hundred dollars a month through it so if there are limitations I need to leave it alone.
I do think it is totally unfair to charge such high fees for non cc payments!

I still haven't heard back from Paypal. It's hard for me to believe they have "rules" that can't be found on their site. Incredible. I sure will post a message here if I DO hear from them but I'm not holding my breath.

Just my 2cents here. I used to have a premier/business account (only so I could take the CC payments). I downgraded my account last year to a personal account. I have received many payments thru PayPal and have had no problems, so I don't believe there are anymore "Limits" to having a Personal Account. The only limit I believe was the inability to accept CC payments.
Yes, many people do not read and send me CC payments. I just quickly refund and state that they are unacceptable as per my auction. They then either use their bank account/paypal balance or send me a money order.
MYFAVORITES4U: There is no distinction between CC and PayPal Balance or Bank Funded payments, so they all show as "Instant Payment". The only difference I have ever seen was when someone sent an e-Check and then there is a waiting to clear period.
I did go to the PayPal website and found info regarding having both a Personal and a Business/Premier Account. Yes, you can have both. Below is copy and paste on the question:
Can I have a Personal and a Premier/Business account?
Yes. You are allowed to sign up for one Personal account and one Premier or Business account. Each account must have a different email address, bank account and credit card.
I actually found quite a bit of info for many of the questions here so the easiest way to find them is:
Go to the PayPal website and click on the "HELP" in the upper right. Then in the box enter "personal account" and enter. Many questions and answer come up.

Yes, LifeIzGood, that's a good thing to do but sometimes I wonder if it's possible to give too much assistance.
I've posted pointers to PayPal help pages before, yet people still insist they can't find the info they need. If you just went through all their Help topics and read each one, I doubt it would take more than 15 minutes. If that.
Very puzzling.
