U.S. Arrests 125 in Nationwide Cybercrime Sweep:

Many are accused of selling stolen or nonexistent goods online, a leading cybercrime category. Suspects fenced stolen goods through online auction sites like eBay Inc. (Nasdaq:EBAY - news), set up phony escrow services to handle payments, and touted fraudulent investment clubs through slick Web sites, according to a summary of cases provided by the Department of Justice (news - web sites).

Are you sure it's Ebay ???.
"What we say is that we do $30 million a day in business," said eBay spokesman Kevin Purseglove. He said fraud taints no more than 0.01 percent of the transactions."

That clears it up. Those statements about selling stolen goods or nonexistent goods on Ebay must be an error

You can find fraudulent offerings in every major newspapers classified. Many auction galleries and in the business districts of most cities and towns. That's like saying there are pickpockets at the mardi gras. Sells papers but is it really news?

dave,
true, there are crooks everywhere.but on ebay you cant tell the crooks from the honest sellers, the good old fashion way of speaking and watching the expression and body language of the sellers are missing, buyers cannot physically examine the merchandise,no way to tell if he even have the merchandise, also the seller could be coming from any part of the country or the world.
yeah,buyer beware,but how ??
feedback?? credit card chargeback may be the only way. or paypal insurance if you use paypal.

I agree with Dave, fraud existed LONG before ebay was around, and will exist long after it is gone. The invention of the telephone increased fraud (telemarketing boiler rooms) but should you not use a phone, or buy something on a phone because of it

Use common sense!!!!!!!!!!

1) protect yourself as much as possible. Use a credit card, or paypal w/ credit card payment

2) Know where you are buying from! - You are an idiot if you buy a $1500 lap top computer for $300 from Romania

3) Some things are better off purchased in person than online. Would you buy a $8000 plasma tv online just to save a few dollars?

4) If it seems to good to be true...

Amazing! Common sense is in short supply these days though. These are the same people who get email from ebay telling them to confirm their account, and do just that!

As if that ever made a difference! My lawyer friend came home one day with a box of bricks- thinking it was a TV. That was a guy who made his living studying body language. LOL
