I just broke a handle on a piece I was wrapping for shipment. It wasn't an expensive item - but I'm still dreading telling the bidder.

Anybody got any ideas on what I should say or how to say it? Should I just tell them it's broke and say I'll return their money (which I haven't actualy received yet).

Or, should I ask if they would be interested in any of the similar items I have?

Cherished, I've done it, too. Broke a beautiful Murano Swan figurine. Thankfully, the buyer was a dealer and he was cool about it. I refunded money, but you might just put both thoughts in your email. See what they say!

OMG, I have done it twice. First one was perfume vial. Very delicate, while wrapping it I broke the wand on the on the handle. Almost cried over this one as it was so beautiful. Emailed the buyer & showed what had happpened. Cut the price in half & she still bought it!!

Thanks everybody for the quick replies. I think I will take a picture of the break and attach it to the e-mail (thanks for that idea Sanmar).

Oh brother--one time I wrapped up a small low-end wooden item in a small package, put it on the roof of the car, forgot it, backed out, then drove in again to get something I'd forgotten, and when I backed out AGAIIN I heard a crunch--knew it was either a squirrel or My Package. I'd run clean over the package.

E-mailed the buyer, apologized, returned her money, repackaged the pieces, and sent them to her because she thought perhaps she could glue them or something.

She left very nice feedback and said I am a true lady. Well, a true CARELESS lady sometimes.

I've done it too, I just am upfront with them, and they have always understood.

Don't feel bad.
I had three items stolen out of my car on the way to the post office.
One person even gave me a positive feedback!
So, I gave them a thank you pos.

I wish I had the dog who stole them, my warm fuzzy would be kickin' some boote'

Hi all,

Well, I didn't exactly break something but I did discover some damage I hadn't noted in the description.

The lady won two vintage leather designer purses. This was way back when things like that ended up with very high bids. When I was packing them I noticed a worn place on one.

So I sent her both along with a check for what she had bid on the damaged purse. She was delighted and left me excellent feedback.

dear hubby was packing a depression glass bowl with lid and as he was putting the bubble wrapped lid in the box he cracked it on the side of the coffee table....in pieces.

i emailed the buyer, who was a dealer. she fully understood. I sent her money back and she left positive feedback.

One time I sold a Cambridge keyhole vase in cobalt. I don't always clean things before I photo them so before I wrapped it, I was wiping it off. There was a hard water line at the top that wouldn't come off. I emailed the buyer and confessed. He was very understanding. I hate to say it, but I have sold a fraternity pin and a school ring and lost both of them around the house. I apologized to the fraternity pin buyer and told them I would email if and when I found it. When I found it, he offered less than it sold for. I went and took the offer since I had been so stupid. With the class ring, I sent the payment back and said I would let her know if I was able to find it. The next time I did a show, the ring and another piece of jewelry I had listed on Ebay turned up wrapped and down in a master salt. I emailed the lady that I had found it, but she didn't respond. I don't blame her. I haven't been able to make myself check my feedback after that one!.
