Have you ever copied and pasted "stolen" text from someones auction description? I have...

Hi,

No, I haven't.

A couple of times I've seen auctions where someone lifted my exact words and also "borrowed" my pictures.

If the item is an obvious one-of-a-kind item for a seller that has already sold then I can see no harm in using most of the description again. I'd venture to say that at least 50% of all ebay listings have descriptions borrowed from either another seller or a website. Sellers Google the item and borrow the info from websites. The electronics sellers must have a 90+% rate of using others info.

Never! I can do it better, usually. I have, however, searched to see exactly what some collectibles are called. That's all.

I never taken someones picture or all of someone decription but I have used bits and pieces of the description...no harm in putting what they say in your own words.

While I have NEVER stolen a photo

I have:
Copied shipping rate table (promptly went to USPS and lowered my prices to Reality-ville)

Copied some End of Auction concepts

Copied some Terms of Auction text

Last but not least, I copied a description from a definition of an item into my auction, of course I modified it.

I think its impossible not to copy even tho its unintentional...if I m selling a "beautiful red vase" and I see it described that way in another auction, I'm not going to call mine a "stunning scarlet toned flower receptacle" just to avoid the same words. Doesnt sound bad, tho, does it??? Copying complete descriptions just doesnt seem right tho...

Yes, but only when I was selling books. Many sellers simply copy the synopsis on the jacket or back of jacket as their description. I do the same. If they forgot to put it in quotes I would do so and add "from description on back or inside (whichever) of jacket",but there was absolutely no reason for me to type all that over again.

No, never copied descriptions, pictures or anything else. I HAVE put links to sites where they sell and tell a lot more, for items like newer electronics, saying click here for more detailed info.

I HAVE had people steal pictures, then have the NERVE to say in their description, 'sorry about the bad picture' or 'my picture doesn't do this justice'

Now that p*ssed me off!

I have never "borrowed" a picture or description for any of my auctions. Occasionally, I will list a fairly rare item and I have had web site owners contact me and ask for permission to use my pictures on a website for collectors.

I can't lift descriptions on my handcrafted items- but I've seen several rival wandmakers' descriptions that show they've looked at mine... And there is one person who has copied a handle shape that I make, but not very well!

Most of my descriptions are so straightforward they border on dull. If I were going to steal - I'd surely steal something better.

I don't copy and paste descriptions from other people's auctions - ever. Nor would I copy somebody else's picture. I always hated it when people plagarized in school and I still hate it.

Before I even started selling - I did read lots of different peoples auctions to get ideas for what terms and conditions I should list. There are some things lots of sellers want to say and there are just so many ways to say it. For example, I think my sentence about sending auction number with payment is in lots of seller's auctions. And I see lots of people say something like "payment due within 10 days". I don't think using sentences like that makes you a plagarizer or thief.

Most everything I have sold is esoteric enough that I could not copy a picture if I wanted to. I would not want to but it would be almost impossible in any case. I have discovered several sellers linking to pictures on my websites of our personal collection to sell related items on eBay. I check my site stats every few days to find people using our pictures without permission. If it seems to be a short term use like a message board I will let it go but if long term I change the name of the picture. The last auction I found was almost up and the seller was linking to pictures of original photographs from our site to sell a book about the subject. Hope the buyer was not too disappointed when the quality of the illustrations was not as good as the originals.

I copy all kinds of stuff, and couldn't care less if people copy mine. BFD.

I always run spell check on copied descriptions, too.

Why does anyone care if I copy "Oxford Univ. Press, 1988, 456 pages, like new condition."

Humorous question in my Oh So Humble opinion.
If what you typed for "Your" auction gets copied & pasted into another sellers auction listing, how the heck do you really know?? Unless of course, you actually take the time to look at all common auction listings. Seems senseless to get upset over something so trivial. If you think your verbage is all that important then I say go write a novel.

I've copied some descriptions somewhere along the line, but I think I pretty much
re-worded them. (Never copied pictures. I usually like my own better.)

Some people are pretty creative with words and thats got to be as much an art form as anything else.

I certainly dont have the inclination or time to go looking to see if my auctions are copied. Sometimes you happen on them, but,....dont they say imitation is the most sincerest form of flattery?? I think it can be annoying when you know you've used a word or words rarely used. It sounds good and then they become buzzwords and lose their original appeal.

But really, nobody owns words! (Except maybe the shabby chic person and coca-cola or something!

Never copied text or pictures from anyone else, but others have actually copied my descriptions word for word and "borrowed" my photos for their own auctions.

An alert bidder actually contacted me about my "borrowed" pictures and text.

She was smart enough to realize that the pictures were mine (I use a unique background for all of my photos) and realized that my auctions had been listed first.

I let it go at first, but finally got mad enough at one particular bidder who copied all of my auctions and photos a total of 12 before I got really fired up.

Please -- I work hard at this, the least a lazy person could do is change a few words and maybe edit the picture a little!

I contacted ebay about the situation, gave auction #'s etc., and I'll be darned if ebay didn't cancel all of the other persons auctions and suspend them! Surprised me!

Good news is, the alert buyer bought all of her goodies from me! Happy ending there.

I have never before or since reported anyone for this, but I thought this one seller was just a little too brazen.

OK -- slam me now for being a member of the ebay police!

Once is awhile doesn't bother me, but a dozen auctions in less than a month was over the top for me.
