We have here some sort of tool for turning nut or whatever with 2 holes for wrench.

And this is some sort of roller with ridges.

Thanks for any ideas!

Hi Dad,
The second one is for getting rid of ants. You roll it over them. It is for the more sporting ant exterminator, the ridges give them a 50/50 chance.
But really I have no idea.

Adrian

The first one looks like the top of a drill that I have that used to belong to my dad. (I think it belonged to HIS dad) Tell me, the rollers on the second one, in the lower foto, are they made of wood or metal? If they are wood, I think it is used for leather, if it is metal, I'll have to look in dad's toolbox to see what is similar to it. I inherited alot of his tools.

Hi all,

Dad, I think maybe the second one is a fluting iron. Not sure... Do a check on eBay and Google. There are quite a few different types.

Lucy, I am just curious. What do you use a fluting iron for?

The first one looks like it's for turning some type of special water or gas valve on and off. I have no idea on the second one. Possibly something the Post Office rolls over bubble envelopes marked "fragile" to see if the sender was serious when he marked it.

Hi all,

Paloma, a fluting iron was used to press the pleats in dresses way back when. Not that I ever used one or plan to in my lifetime... I ran across them when I was researching an old sad iron I sold.

Can't imagine ironing anything with a sad iron but my mom says she had to use one during WWII when the electric ones weren't available.

I use her old heavy one whenever I cook rice - it holds the pan lid down nice and tight - steams the rice to perfection! LOL!

The second one looks rather kinky?

It would probably make a good back massager or even massaging the bottoms of the feet. Those are just a couple of suggestions... Really I have no idea.

The first one I have no idea....

paloma91:

The rollers are wood.

Libra63:

Your idea of a massager did come to mind.

sparkz:

You may be warm!
I've seen them before, but don't know what their use is.

Roadsmith:

Tootsie is who I plan on using these on once I find out what to do with them!!

The roller thingy - could it be a graining tool, used to make paint look like wood on old furniture?

Dad,
Utilities sometimes use a special valve that they don't want anyone to be able to use with common tools, such as when they turn off a customer for non payment. My thought is that this is the type of tool that would be used for this purpose. I've seen the local water company use a similar device for that purpose.

I went to school in Ohio with a Tootsie, she was a great friend and a lot of fun.

The second item is used for applying the ridges to Tootsie Rolls. It's known in the trade as a Tootsie Roller.

Hi:

I contacted someone who collects fluting irons and the likes.

They seemed sure in saying that the (tootsie roller) was:

A washer to be used in the washtub along with a washboard.

That the way I decided to list it.
Maybe someone will correct me if it's wrong.
