I know this has been discussed before so maybe somebody can help me - Pop-up ads are driving me absolutely NUTS!!!! It seems like I have more than ever and spend half of my time closing them. I have all of these little boxes that are open at the bottom of my screen, and they are all pop-up ads that continually POP UP!!! Is there a way to cut down on them or get rid of them altogether. Thanks for any help because I can't stand it much longer!!!

Your ISp might have one for you--Earthlink has a pop-up blocker that works well.

Also, Google has a free toolbar with pop-up blocker that you can download, and it also works very well.

There is a free Adware download that searches for spyware that gets put on your PC from sites and deletes it. It has resolved the problem for me. Good luck!

Spybot search and destroy is much better that lavasoft. http://www.safer-networking.org/
It finds a lot more of them and lets you block most so you don't need to keep deleting them.

download the free Google toolbar with the powerful pop up blocker. I can't tell you when the last time I saw a pop up ad since I started using it.

But DO download and run spybot search and destroy and also the JavaCools spyware blaster (which runs with the Spybot) for a clean computer. You won't believe the stuff you have lurking on your computer if you've never used it!

Upgrade your browser to Netscape 7.1. It kills 99.99 % of all popups

IF you are getting a lot of pop ups, that means that your inadvertently downloaded a piece of spyware. Either in a program you installed or just by visiting a site. The first thing you need to do is to dump or clean out any of that spyware. If you clean out your temp files (including your temp internet files) on your computer, that should help with some of it. If you need help on doing that, please post what kind of computer you are using, your operating system (windows 95, 98 XP or MAC OS 9.1 or whatever) and what browser and version you are using. If you need help with getting any of this info, please post here and I will help you with that.

The best "deep cleaning" product I have found with the least amounts of headaches is Spybot Search and Destroy and it's free. It even updates itself. I really swear by it. You can go to CNET.COM search for it using the words spybot search - It will take you to the download page.

HINT: Don't download and use spybot before cleaning out your temp files or it will run and run and run. It will get all of them but it takes a longer amount of time.

I agree with BEAR1949. Download Netscape 7.1 and never see popups again. You can download a free copy at:

angelwoman, yes, you can delete your temp files and your temp internet files without any ill effects. Same goes for your "cookies"

Here is the link to adware. After you install it make sure you run the update when you start it.

Beware of Spyware
People often unwittingly install spyware on their computers when they download other kinds of useful software applications without reading the legal disclosures usually buried deep in the user agreement.
Once people find the programs on their computers, they discover that it's almost impossible to delete them without a high level of technical expertise.
Spyware can cause sluggish PC performance and system instability, and can unleash a barrage of pop-up ads and unsolicited bulk e-mail, popularly known as spam. In the most egregious cases, spyware can be extremely invasive -- it can track what Web sites people visit and the keywords they enter in search engines. It also can hijack their Internet connections.
Some well known spyware programs often show up in peer-to-peer (P2P) file-swapping software that people download to trade digital music and video files on the Internet. P2P software often contains programs like Bonzi Buddy and Gator, which collect data on users' surfing and shopping habits and send it to a third party that develops profiles for targeted pop-up ads.
Consumers can avoid spyware by taking the time to closely read software privacy policies and descriptions before they download the programs. Several Web sites, including Spywareguide.com and Spywareinfo.com, contain detailed listings of programs widely considered to be spyware. Several programs can erase spyware from personal computers, such as Adaware
