Hi everybody. I'm looking for opinions.

While searching some closed china auctions, I noticed some sellers putting dinner plates and other pieces up as dutch auctions. Has anybody here tried that?

I haven't done any dutch auctions - but I was thinking maybe that might be a good way to sell things like 8 dinner plates.

Great for a buyer! I wouldn't do it as a seller, however, because I think the prices can be much lower. It would be OK if they were listed at the price you expect (like a fixed-price listing), but if you expect auction-type results, you'll probably be disappointed.

I have done it in the past, but only with items that are hot and there is decent amount of competition. I would only do it with Fixed Price Items though.

I have done it on several occasions. I sell a lot china to Replacements Ltd. Some times there pieces they won't take i.e. cups & saucers or Bread & butter plates or maybe they will pay a dime. I will list them on a Dutch Auction & hope I can get rid of them. Evin if I get a dollar each plus shipping I am way ahead. Right now I have 12 Noritakew Cups & saucers & 8 Lenox cups & saucers that I will list after the first of the yr. I ma closing down as of next week until January, going to be gone from the 23rd till 1/1/04

I agree with Jack that they too confusing and prone to draw stupid bidders.
With the Fixed Priced Auctions and BINs nowadays there is less need for Dutch Auctions and they are fairly rare.

I never figured out how ebay came up with naming them dutch auctions because a true Dutch auction the auctioner starts at a high price and then goes down and the first person that bids wins it at that price and there is no more bidding. I go to Holland every year to buy items and every time I buy something at auction you always wonder if you could have gotten it cheaper if you would wait for the bid to go down.

Here's a webpage that describes 'Dutch Auctions'.

As others have said, I think it depends on what you sell and if you can be happy with getting the opening bid. I have a bunch running right now and love it. I sell fabric by the yard and opened at the price I wanted to get. My whole day tomorrow will be measuring, cutting, folding, weighing, boxing and addressing and that's exactly what I wanted. So it depends on the item. I would never run a dutch auction if I couldn't start the price at what I needed to get to be satisfied.
