Lately I have been having trouble signing off my computer and the message says Backweb agent. Some time when I end task it will end and shut down other times it just crashes. I have been reading about this and some say it is compaq spyware. Some say I don't need it. Does anyone of the smart computer people here know anything about it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanking all in advance....

Forgot to tell you I have a Compaq Presario about 4 years old. It seems slow even after I do my maintenance. I really don't care about slow but I don't like it when I can't sign off.

Libra,
Backweb Lite is spyware. It is sometimes used for legitimate reasons and comes installed on Compaq and HP computers. It is also on the installation CD for the Kodak(and other) digital cameras. It installs itself if you choose to register your camera online. Spybot Search and Destroy will find it and successfully remove it. Be sure to click on the info tag before you select remove, as it will tell you all about what it can do. Unfortunately this program can be used for less than legitimate purposes. It makes several entries in your registry, so thats the reason I recommend Spybot S&D to remove it as I know from personal experience it works.

Not 100% spyware. Mine was installed by my Kodak camera so they can keep track of updates. I disabled them.

I deleted mine through the add remove programs when I was running 98, I don't think it caused any problems.

Got spybot search and destroy? Got spyware blaster? Got hijackthis?

If you don't...(and everybody SHOULD!!!) download and run them. The Spybot has a fabulous forum that can tell you what you need and don't need on your computer. Before you post, they want you to run Hijackthis and tell them what's running on your computer.

If you don't have those, download them, run them and then ask me

what I used to do (before windows xp) was read over the forums there and you can get a good idea of what "should" be there and not.

Same here peiklk. I installed the Kodak software on 2 of my computers. The one I chose to automatically update is the one that wound up with Backweb lite on it. Compaq and HP use it for Legitimate purposes, but many others don't. I'm not sure if they were using it 4 years ago. She may have picked it up from another source.

Sorry it took me so long to get back. Thanks Cheryl I learned a lot by reading those two web pages. Now I know how updates appeared on my computer, but I haven't had an update for quite some time so I disabled it but it can be put back on if I reboot. I will try that a while. I downloaded spyhunter and they called Backweb a parasite and they said danger was severe. I guess it isn't something I have to worry about. So I will disable it when I sign. Thanks everyone. It seems like the knowledge I know about my computer fits into the palm of my hand. I did hear that Microsoft wants to stop updating windows 95 and 98 and have everyone XP and higher. I hope it's not to soon because I don't want to buy a new computer and I don't want to download XP on my old computer.

so Libra63....did you ever bother to go look at the Spybot search and destroy web page to see what they do?

I would not pass on information that would do any harm to your computer. I personally use Spybot usually once a day to clean up my computer. Also spyware blaster to keep junk off my computer (it runs within spybot once you download it).

I just couldn't believe that both sparkz and I recommended "spybot" and you found something called spyhunter.

SpywareBlaster

SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from ever being installed.

By setting a "kill bit" for spyware ActiveX controls, SpywareBlaster can prevent the installation of any spyware ActiveX controls from a webpage. It does this while not interfering with "friendly" ActiveX controls - so your browser can work correctly and you can have peace of mind!

You won't get any more annoying "Yes/No" boxes popped up, asking you to install a spyware ActiveX control (which can increasingly be found in pop-up ads!). In fact, Internet Explorer will never even download or run the spyware ActiveX control!

In addition, SpywareBlaster can prevent many of these spyware ActiveX controls from running, even if they are already installed on your system.*

The newest SpywareBlaster version can even block spyware/tracking cookies!
And SpywareBlaster does not need to be running in the background to provide this protection!

The SpywareBlaster database contains information on these known spyware Active-X controls. Make sure you run the Check For Updates feature frequently to get the latest database! (And make sure you check the new items to protect your system against them!)

SpywareBlaster also provides the exclusive System Snapshot! - Take a snapshot of your computer in its clean state, and use System Snapshot later to revert many changes made by spyware and browser hijackers!

SpywareBlaster System Snapshot works a lot like Microsoft's System Restore for Windows ME/XP - however it exclusively targets items used by spyware and browser hijackers to embed themselves into your system - so you can get the results you want: a spyware-free system. It provides the following benefits:

Only targets items used by spyware and browser hijackers to embed themselves into your system - so you can get the results that you want: a spyware-free system
Detects changes and additions - and alerts of both on a restore operation
Provides a list of changed/added items - so the user has full control over what will be restored
Covers hundreds of items - including the most popular areas altered by browser hijackers and spyware, as well as many currently un-tapped areas
And much much more!

(my note: and this is installed IN spybot once you download it)

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Everybody is extrememly lucky that both of these programs are free! FREE! I have sent a donation because it works so darned well!

Hijack this is just a little program that tells you what is running on your computer in the background and not totally necessary - BUT! it's great for fixing something like backweb agent or messenger or anything else that you don't know how to go into and clean it out of the registry. All you do is click "fix this".

What I have done so far is remove spyhunter from my computer completely. I can also by clicking Back Web Agent in the add remove area when I am on and it will disable it. It doesn't get rid of it, just disables it. It seems to run faster and I don't get that message when I shut down. When I start up again I have to disable it again. WHen I can find a little time I am going to try what you suggested glass girl. I know your information is correct it just I can't find the time right now. Work 2 jobs, both parttime, Babysitting granddaughter, new granddaughter one on the way, hopefully by Jan 1. My house is a mess I need Merry Maids worse that spybot right now. Thank goodness my eBay room has a door...My main problem is my granddaughter. She loves to type on my computer (8 yrs old) so I bring up Microsoft word to let her type and heaven knows what she does when I leave. It takes me a while to figure out what she has done. Nothing harmful just a mess. Thanks for your information and when I install it I will tell you....
