Will someone tell me the difference between High Speed & DSL? I see ads about High Speed, but never tell me what it really means.

For those of us in rural areas the only option is dial-up. I've been told cable will not happen in my lifetime (sigh)and I can't afford satellite (and don't want to clean the snow off the dish!) Things are looking up for DSL however. Sanmar if your only option is dial-up see if your ISP offers something called internet acceleration. Mine finally did and it really does work. It's not high speed but it is faster. The data is simply compressed for quicker browsing. Download times remain the same (files, etc.)

I tried Comcast cable for a month, didn't see that much difference concerning what I do on the internet. I hardly download anything, just use it for eBay & surfing. It wasn't worth the cost to keep it past the trial month.
If you download a lot it's probably the way to go.

Hey!! Not one of you has given me a definition of what is high speed compared to dial up.I ask a simple question & get zip back. I just want to know what is high speed. I am already on DSL & not interested in changing.

I have Juno SpeedBand (dial-up) and I tested at 133. It costs $14.95 per month, and regular (unaccelerated) service is $9.95 per month.

I just switched from DSL to Cable and have really seen almost no difference in speed. My DSl was supposedly a buisness conection with should have operated faster but from what I remember about the last time I went to that site - I'm actually running a little faster now with the cable so I have no complaints.

Talk about night and day - I went from AOL to Adelphia Cable Internet. Wow! It's super fast and in the last year I think I've had maybe 15 mins of downtime and that's only because there were glitches in our home network. There was some email downtime recently when they were upgrading their system. Talk about panic!

One reply before I go to work. As far as dishes go, there is a trick in working with leaves and snow. I used to work with sat dishes all the time. All you need to do to protect against those things is to put a big garbage bag over the dish and tie it down securely. The signal goes right through the plastic bag. Doesnt go through glass or wood.
In some areas cable & DSL are similar in speed, in others it's not. As everyone has testified to here.

i have satellite for tv set and i have time warner cable for my aol.
when i have problem with aol,i have to call time warner and aol,i get bounced back and forth and it is more expensive.
i am looking to ditch aol next year.

I believe the original question was "What is the difference between Earthlink High Speed and Earthlink DSL?". The answer is that High Speed is still dial up but Earthlink compresses the web pages prior to sending them to your PC where they are then uncompressed. For pages with lots of text it works OK but for graphic intensive pages, it buys you nothing as JPEGS are already compressed. If your only option is dial up, it's problably not too bad. If you have the option of DSL or Cable, I'd go with one of them.

THANK YOU, Tomservo. You finally answered my basic question. I guess I wasn't theonly who didn't know what it was.I have seen it advertised in hotel ads as well as the Earthlink ads. I was sure tit wasn't the same as DSL.

If you really want to test your speed - and get some tips to tweak your system for faster connections - check out:
I had Earthlink DSL for over 4 years and called to ask if they could see their way to a better deal than the $50/month I was dutifully paying. Afterall, there's a lot of competition out there that wasn't there 4 years ago.
I had about 1 day of issues with Earthlink in 4 years - so not displeased with the service at all.
However, their concern for keeping customers is almost non-existent. They did give me a free month - just for asking about it.
So, did the research and signed up for service with Verizon - for a savings of $15/month ($34.95). Called Earthlink to cancel (since that's the only way you can do it - not online, but via phone).
You'll never guess what the nice lady told me -- do you know we can offer you a rate of $29.99? --- Well, I told her it would have been something the guy 2 months ago should have told me - and they wouldn't have lost a customer... "Now cancel my service, please."
A little frustrated, but I don't own any stock in that company now - so tough luck on them, huh...

when i finish you probably will still be in the dark. first to consider: cost of dsl could be 50-60bucks if you sign up for year...dialup is, in my area $19.95...dsl is an external modem hooked between your phone line and cpu...always on, unless you turn of the cpu...never dial "nothing." dial up is exactly that...got to dial a, usually toll free number, to receive access to internet...to digress, further cost...the dsl modem can cost upwards of $200...maybe even more for installation, if you dont know how to set the "dumbmodem" gateway, isp, etcetera parameters...you cannot use your phone line while the dialup is in use for the apparent reason-line's busy...with dsl, installer places splitter on phone line, which will allow receipt of incoming phone calls while your computer is active...if you have never experienced using your computer while talking to someone; in my estimation, its all just been made worth while...finally, efficiency...dial up can work no faster than your internal modem...the number advertised is +57,000bits per second[what ever the h--- that is]...no phone modem operates continually at this rate, because few phone lines, except highspeed fiberoptics can transmit ebay's, or any other sites info....on the other hand, dsl is rated around 200,000bitsper second...and they dont perform regularly... but to give you some idea of a bench...first, my dial up operates at about 28,000kps....my dsl-and it is not the greatest because of distance from the tower, operates regularly at no lower than 100,000kps...attached is an url for an auction barn in south carolina...run by a real computer guru...further, this bench mark is complicated because his uploads are thru apple, which sometime takes time to view...on a dial up, his auction takes 5-10 minutes to upload...on my dsl, the pages load as fast as you can scroll them...having possibly bored you with all this, i guess the only real definition...both use the phone line, one uses it much more efficiently...one cost much more than the other...one plugs into your cpu, the other plugs into your cpu, and give you a new piecs of hardware with four extra cords to contend with...one inflates your bill more than the other...
and i just realized i cant paste the url...i will post it separately if you are interested in seeing just how slow a dialup can be.
