Tried to do ScanDisk this morning, both on reboot and from the active desktop disabling programs running in the background.

The scandisk took forever and finally I just cancelled. It would get to the end of the bar and start over.
I waited around 20 minutes, where usually it only takes minutes.

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening?
Thanks for any help!

Sounds like ya got something still running in the background (screensaver, etc)???

Do a CLEAN BOOT or use CTRL+ALT+DELETE & end ALL un-necessary proggies before starting yer SCAN-DISK!

If ya donna know how to do a CLEAN-BOOT, go to MICROSOFT/WINDOWS.com & search

I agree, it sounds like a software is running in the background. If you are not watching the computer while it's happening, it just seems like it takes forever. What really happens is that the scandisk keeps restarting. It will run forever and come up with a message like " scandisk restarting" or something like that. If you are not watching it when it happens, you'll miss it. Very frustrating. BUT if you have a HUGE hard disk, it can take forever just because the h/d is big.

The easiest quickest way I have found to figure it out is before starting your scandisk, do a CTRL+ALT+DELETE and see what programs are running. Take a look at them. Highlight one that you think is not necessary and click on END TASK. If it is a necessary part of the operating system, the computer will hang. In that case, you would have to reboot and start over. Ending task is alot safer than messing with the your system.ini etc if you don't know what you're doing. This way, if you make a mistake, you just reboot. If you mess up your INI's you could have more headaches later.

Anyway, after your have ended task on as much of the listed operations as possible, then try scan disk again.

AFTERTHOUGHT: I should have asked what operating system you are using. I believe this works on any windows 98 2000 & XP machine. In any case you won't change or hurt anything in your computer by doing the above.

to temporarily boot into safe mode:
In Windows 98 holding down the F8 key during start up should bring up the Startup Menu. appears Just click on SAFE MODE,
