I don't get it.

I was looking at this auction:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2680942059&category=31387

and a pop-up window offering to connect me to A*ct**nW*rks comes up, asking for name and password.

I looked at some other auctions by the same seller. Same login pop-up.

Does anyone know what the point of this is (besides sheer annoyance), and why does eBay allow it?

In other words, WTF, over?

What browser are you using? I am using Safari and even with Pop-up blocker turned off I don't get it.

I have no suggestion as to why it is there - I wonder if they have something funky in their description script. (although I looked and did not see anything). The only thing I can think of is that it is related to the click to elarge link on their images which opens a seperate Works hosted window but you should not have to be logged in to see it as it is only a gallery window and should not open automatically anyway.

Maybe your computer is possessed?

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

I got the same pop up. I'm not sure what it is, but my best guess is a non-scam techno problem with the site you mention. I'm sure it's obvious to you, but to any others I advise no one to enter any name or password in this area.

I am using Internet Explorer under Windows XP on a spawn of Satan Compaq Presario 2100 laptop.

I tried it in Internet Explorer under MacOS 9.1 on an Apple Titanium PowerBook. Got a different pop-up but it was a login screen as well.

I tried it in Netscape Communicator 4.75 under MacOS 9.1 on the same Apple Titanium PowerBook. Got a third pop-up, also a login screen.

Eerie.

I'm thinking of reporting it to eBay.

I'm feeling left out. I even tried it in IE and didn't get it. I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that I am a Works user and am already logged in to their site.

D you see anything in the source code that would explain it?

My guess is anyone using DSL or Cable will get the pop ups. I am using dial up right now and I can't get it to down load all of the way. Just way too many photo's placed in this listing. If I were looking for this item, I would end up passing on it simply because it takes too long for it to download. This seller really needs to consolidate the photos and reduce the number of them.

I just refreshed four times and finally got all the photos to load. No pop ups though.

Stone - one photo may be appropriate for $5 items but if I am going to bid on an often faked Rolex currently sitting at over $1700 I want details and lots of them.
