I am looking for either a Westie or a Maltese male puppy - can't find one on eBay (had to make this eBay related ), and there are none around here...so have been searching in area papers.

If you happen to see any for sale in your classifieds, could you please let me know?

I had a male Maltese that was 7 when my little boy was born, and they took to each other exceptionally well. Well, Benjie died in my lap on the way to the vet last year (and my little boy was with me - he's 6 now), and sometimes at night he still cries for another "Benjie dog". I wanted to get him one for Christmas, and couldn't find one

We did get a rescue from the pound about a month after Benjie passed - she is an adorable little (get this!) half Jack Russell, half Silky Terrier. But it's not the same as raising a puppy - she is more attached to me than him LOL

Just if you happen to see something, could you please let me know?

Thank you

did you try putting Westie or Maltese RESCUE in Google? I know that the people that gave me my dog have an extensive Yorkie Rescue that they deal with and they are not puppies but need homes.
I LOVE Endicia! You will too – Click here!

thank you glassgrl I think the rescue projects do a wonderful job! If it were for me, I would. I think it's important that a child have a puppy that grow up with him

Go to the AKC web site www.akc.org
and search for Westie or Maltese breeders in your area.

http://www.akc.org/breeds/breederinfo/breeder_search.cfm

Also lists breed rescue groups

Please let us know when you do locate one of these puppies. This is a very sweet thread--heartwarming, in fact. \

We'll want to see a picture of the darling, too.

We found our purebred dog (Great Pyrenees) over the internet. She was flown to us back in August. Just make sure you're not going through a puppy mill. : )
Good Luck!

toasted, those photos are beautiful! I can't believe WalMart did them - wow! I love the one with angel wings

This is the only photo I have left of my little one with his buddy. I lost all of our photos in the fire, but miraculously found this one when going through what was left...it's condition isn't that great, but at least I still have it

I should start another thread asking for tech help - I had tons of photos of both of the little guys on my computer. I still have the hard drive, but no one around here can pull the pictures off it...another project to get started on I guess

wgm - I took a look in our local newspaper and there was a Yorkie/Maltese mix listed for $350.00. Don't know where you're from or if you're even close, but this was in a local Maine newspaper. I can give you more information if interested.

I know how very important dogs are in our lives. I'm a poodle person myself and have had poodles since I was about 10 years old. As a matter of fact, my last toy poodle was almost 22 years old - no lie! My vet said he'd never seen another dog live to be so old. I finally had to have her put to sleep because the poor little girl didn't know where she was most of the time. Her quality of life had deteriorated and it was time to say goodbye.

Good luck with your search.

Here's another site that has dogs and cats from all over the country. They take listings from any shelter and seem well stocked with homeless animals. Good luck!

cta - thank you so much! that little puppy sounds absolutely adorable, and if I lived closer, it would already be sitting in my lap! I live in South Carolina, so unfortunately it is too far to pick up

I have been looking all over the Carolinas and even Georgia. I talked to a few breeders I found on Bear's suggestion, and they only raise show quality - with show quality prices! I just can't afford $900.00 for a puppy!

I have been checking the rescue sites, and also petfinders and sites like that. They have very few puppies - it if were just for me, I would have no problem getting an adult dog. But I really want a puppy for my child so they can grow up together (I know, I know - sons never grow up! )

Where I am there is an over-abundance of Jack Russells, Labs, and Rotties - but in between shipping and listing, I am searching...and searching...and searching...

I sincerely appreciate everyone's help!!

If you live in an area where you can take a dog to run Britneys are great dogs for kids or adults. there are very sweet tempered and loving but have all the neccesary energy and love of outdoors to be able to keep up with a growing boy that wants to ride his bike and run and toss balls around. Since Britneys are bred for field and show you should be able to get a good pure breed that is not neccessarily show quality for around $300. Oh yeah - and they are not big dogs or big sheders - two pluses for a dog that is primarily a house dog.

I don't have any leads for you but wanted to share.... My Maltese "puppy" passed away this past August at age 21. She would have been 22 in December!

The Maltese is an intelligent and loyal breed and is a wonderful companion. We kept her in a "puppy cut" all her life to avoid tangles and she always pranced after a haircut as though she was young again. I would encourage you to find another Maltese as a companion for your child. You won't regeret it!

I am thrilled with finding one! I have been looking - really looking! - for close to three months, and nothing! I post here last night, and who would have thought! I was resolved to have to drive five states away to find one, but I found the ad in the Charlotte Observer!

Am heading to look at map now to get directions - I have never been to Wadesboro, NC before (actually never even heard of it before now!).

ooooh please do not buy from people who sell puppies in the newspapers! These are backyard breeders aka puppy mills.
They think they are doing fine, but unless a breeder is improving the breed, they are just making money off of it.
Sorry! Find a reputable breeder, meet them, meet the parents, they should be willing to take a pupply back if you can not keep it, and they should insist on spay neuter and also be inured in the good mental and physical capabilities of the dog. Pet quality versus show quality etc.

sigh...

Japerton - thank you for your advice

I have spent a total of over two hours on the phone with this woman. She has two Malteses - male and female - and lives by herself...daughter goes to UNCC in Charlotte, husband died last year. The dogs are her constant companions since she lives alone. This was her dog's 3rd litter. I could go on and on...was like talking to my grandmother! LOL

I have to sign a contract that says if I can't keep the puppy for any reason, it has to go back to her, and includes a 180 "warranty". The little guy is AKC registered, but not "show quality" (that terms really irks me), so the contract includes a "spay and neuter" clause, which actually is no big deal for me because I don't plan on breeding him.

I have to go to her house to pick up the puppy because she wants to "see" me and "get a feel" for what kind of person I am - so I will get a pretty good idea of what the breeding conditions are.

I totally agree with you - I think puppy farms are horrible! The people who run them should be forced to live in the same conditions to which they subject the dogs!

ya got a good dog mom, then.
I know it's a pain, but show quality versus pet quality means that the breeder knows what the heck she is doing.
yay! happy ending!!!

well, I got a huge disappointment today

The woman called me just as I was heading out the door (in the sleet) to go pick up my new "child", and her daughter had promised the puppy to her roommates mother and forgot to tell her.

I have been bummed all day! I keep telling myself that everything happens for a reason (not very comforting though), so back to searching...

chathamsue - I did keep it from my child, but it was so hard! I am glad I did - I don't think I could have handled his disappointment too!

Things will work out soon, I hope. I have been telling him I will get him a puppy for his birthday, which is in June...so at least I have plenty of time to still find one

I'm glad you kept it a secret!

When you do find a puppy remember to have a camera to save the expression on your son's face. I surprised my daughter with a toy poodle (her dream dog) 3 years ago. I showed up when school let out with "Pierre". Her expression was priceless!

I thought I would share this pic of "Daisy", enjoying herself on the sofa earlier tonight. She is only 8 months old & a mere 80 lbs. : )

Daisy is beautiful!!! I love the expression on her face in the photo! I have never seen a Great Pyrenees - very pretty dog!

BTW - Daisy is the name of the "pound puppy" we rescued after losing Benjie

This is a cute story: my little boy is a train fanatic, so everything has to do with trains. When we "adopted" Daisy from the pound, he named her "Mavis" LOL! For those who don't know, she is one of the few female engines on Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends. Well, I wasn't too particularly fond of the name, but thought "okay, it's his dog anyway"...and everytime we would call her, she would just sit and look at us, as if saying "MAVIS????? Is that the best you can do????" ROFL!

So we talked, and I suggested we find a cuter name - that maybe she didn't like Mavis...so he called out "Daisy" (another female engine on TTE)...her eyes lit up and she ran over to him!

It could have been that was her name before, but the people at the shelter said she was a stray found on the side of a road and didn't appear to have ever belonged to anyone...I say she thought she was too cute to be stuck with a name like Mavis! LOL!

This is our Daisy...

Your Daisy is adorable! And the name suits her. She's not a "Mavis".

Here is another one of mine. She is watching t.v. She is not allowed on the furniture but she is about as obedient as my children!
