This so sucks!! I thought I was more or less immune from this chargeback business because of the relatively low ticket $ amount of my sales...I got my first today and IT STINKS!!

Guy in Royal Oak Michigan buys a postcard of a motel in Royal Oak Michigan..I shipped to a confirmed address in Royal Oak Michigan and sent shipping notification yesterday. Today I get the chargeback notice...FRAUDULENT USE OF CREDIT CARD?? I don't think so!! I don't use EDC because of the cost (my post office requires the EDC packages to be 1/2" thick which would require $.20 more in envelope cost, $.23 more in postage and $.33 for EDC)..NOT WORTH IT for a fricking $5.00 postcard!! From the sounds of previous comments on this board, I could have done all that stuff and still be SOL when it comes to chargeback time.

OK..about all I can do is block the bidder and wait to file the NPB and FVF...and tell other sellers that they may want to block too.

One question, would it be considered harassment for me to email the buyer to ask WTF is going on?

EDIT: I did a bidder search and found that buyer had bid and won another postcard (does this really sounds like a case of stolen id? Buys two crummy postcards??)Sent heads up email to the other seller.

Edited again to take out name of buyer..looks like he is ok.

If it's only one very rare chargeback then maybe it's simply better to weather the $5 storm? If this happens a lot then it is time to add all the extra steps and expenses to prevent it.

I wouldn't ask "WTF," but I would ask if they are aware of the situation. Use diplomacy, it's possible the buyer didn't remember the purchase.

It's hard to believe a buyer would use a fraudulent CC for a 5.00 purchase!

I think there is a mistake somewhere.
Or the buyer may be over his CC limit.

Did your buyer leave you feedback? If so, that is confirmation he received the card.

Even if he did not leave feedback. Send him an email and make sure you include a reference as to auction number, item and bidder Id. If he replies with an affirmation that he received the card, if he he says it was not what he ordered, you have your auction, and his reply as proof that he bid. Paypal will clear it up , but it may take awhile.

$5.00 lose might not be a big deal, but there is a $10.00 chargeback to follow and that will really be irritating!

good morning neglus

what a bummer, one thing I would do is pull their contact info and then email them. Not only would I ask what is going on but you need to clarify if there account has been hijacked i.e. inform ebay of bad contact info or possibly fraudulent activity. maybe they are testing the waters to see how easy it is to get away with buying, getting and not paying.....

I am sure someone here will come up with some excellent wording

What about paypal's $10 chargeback fee? Did you get a notice about the extra fee?

I would pull their contact information and call them.

I also would do a reverse phone number search to see if the phone number matched the address you were given by paypal.

If the phone number registered with ebay is invalid report it right away so they will be NRU.

If it's too late to pull their contact info just lookup their number using the name and mailing address you were given and call that number.

Stay calm when talking to him. This could be a mistake.

Maybe the guy ordered, never told his wife who pays the bills and she assumed it was fraud and did a chargeback without telling him.

You'll learn a lot more by talking to them on the phone than you ever will through an email.

dc would not protect the seller if this is a case of fraudulent credit card.

This is a recent transaction - auction ended January 2, paid Jan. 7, shipped Jan 8th-reversed Jan 9th. The buyer sent a note with the payment even: "Note:
Sorry for the delay. PW problem! Looking forward to receiving... ". Not sure what "PW" problem meant???

I did email the buyer and of course did not say "wtf" - just asked him to fill me in ...

I forgot about the $10 chargeback fee! I didn't see that anywhere on the notice PP sent me..the money was taken out of my account and no $10 fee assessed. Does that come later? If so, then I AM REALLY TICKED ABOUT THIS!! I am already wasting more time on a lousy $5 transaction than I have time-budgeted!

I am not going to change my shipping because of this one transaction - I think I would rather drop PayPal if it becomes a big problem. It is a shame to waste so much money to mail a low ticket item..I prefer to spend the resources on a nice plastic protective sleeve that the buyer can use instead of useless bubble envelopes and enriching USPS for the EDC!!

I think I will wait to see buyer's answer to my email before calling but thanks for the idea.

neglus-it could be that he has used his CC so many times, that CC company puts a hold on it. This is happening right now with my dad, he's living with me now, and he's got so many CC's I cannot keep up with them.

I have received numerous letters and phone calls asking if he did this charge or cash advance. He's hard of hearing, so I have to do all this..

He IS using the card, he goes to the casino, (with me or my brother and sisters driving him there, I guess we are 'enablers' but whatta ya do) and gets so many cash advances, it would blow you away. He DOES make all the payments, but still...

But these CC companys look at it as excessive and hold the card, until they can talk to him (or rather me) to confirm he is using it, it is not fraud.

*maybe that is what this guy is doing?

just a thought.

An update - heard from the buyer and he said he accidently used a closed account to pay for the item. Looks like the reversal has been cancelled and a new payment posted...looks like all is well. I feel a little foolish for getting so hysterical over $5..but it was the PRINCIPAL of the thing..PayPal actually put a hold on my account over this stinking $5 when my integrity was never in question!! They later wrote me and said they had lifted the hold as a "courtesy" but that I wasn't covered by the seller protection plan because i hadn't delivered with EDC - the fact that the item wouldn't be delivered was never in question..I am glad I don't sell high ticket items! Thanks all for the input!

Glad to hear it worked out.

It's a bit scary to learn it took paypal 3 days to determine that the buyer's credit card account had been closed.

I ship within 24 hours of receiving payment.
