Outlook has been plagued with viruses for years. That is the reason I never use it.

I never use outlook either. I thought I was te only one.
However I did get two virus laced emails yesterday. They got deleted. The people that open these are the same one's who fill out the paypal/ebay scam emails!

I use outlook and in 4 years have never had a virus. Virus protection is so important I started with McAfee, then Norton and now my ISP stops all incoming emails with viruses.

Millions of computer users using MS Outlook are infected so somebody's getting hit. I never use MS Outlook either. And to think they are ready to knight Sir Bill Gates in jolly old England.

There is no reason today to have mail load onto your computer's hard drive.
Outlook is well named: You should always be on the Outlook for a new virus!
For approx $8 a month I have email and web hosting and if anyone wants to email me they email me at [email protected] so they don't have to go to joeblftsnx@personal_isp.com.
I control my own images, I can store files, and create an ftp host for friends who need files.
Host based email is old school when it looks like unix, but now the interfaces are www based and mighty nice.
Plus, with the hoards of spam, I can delete it, filter it and it never is on my hard drive.
I also use yahoo, but they have shrunkydunk the file size down to an embarassing number.
I guess it's all the [email protected] on the news message boards...

Just rec'd this email from my provider:
Dear Adelphia Power Link Customer,
Adelphia would like to make our customers aware of a new virus, the W32/Mydoom@MM. This new virus is a mass-mailing type of virus that arrives as an e-mail attachment. If the attachment is launched, it may allow access to your computer from a remote individual.
To minimize exposure to this and other email viruses we recommend using extreme caution or never opening email attachments.
As a reminder, to limit exposure and confusion, Adelphia will never send it's customers emails with attachments.
If your computer becomes infected, the worm creates a "backdoor" for attackers to remotely access your computer, files and network resources. In addition, the "backdoor" has the ability to download and execute arbitrary files onto your computer.
Further information on this virus/worm can be found on the following links:
http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp?id=mydoom

Adelphia offers several suggestions to ensure the security of your computer from not only viruses, but also hackers and pop-ups. Adelphia's E-Safety site provides information on firewalls, antivirus protection, Trojan scanners, Operating System updates as well as pop-up blockers, email information, and parental controls. Please visit the E-Safety website at http://www.adelphia.com/esafety for more information.

My office shut down the email system today to get rid of this problem. Several of us were getting them. Some opened them not knowing what they were. I haven't checked my Outlook yet here at home.

One thing you may want to do if you use Outlook is to turn off the preview screen. Virus' can be sent embedded into an image. Nasty, nasty thing. What I just noticed is that my email from Adelphia is dated tomorrow also says the date I rec'd it is tomorrow. Here's the header:
From: "Adelphia Customer Support"
To: Adelphia Powerlink Customer

If you use OUTLOOK EXPRESS, & you want to be safe from ATTACHMENTS, then goto:
TOOLS >> OPTIONS >> SECURITY >> DO NOT ALLOW ATTACHMENTS...
This way, ya don't have to worry about accidentally opening an attactment -- IT T'AINT THERE!

If you program your e-mail not to accept attachments, I assume that includes picture attachments. Is that correct? Those now download by themselves without clicking on them

Not sure of the point?
VIRUSES can ride on JPGs or GIFs so I'm not worried about receiving pics??

Just checked and apparently not because " Do not allow attachments" was already set as a default on my security options and I get all pics sent out in my e-mail.

MAH645 The only email that contains Porno that came to my mailbox was from Yahoo and they also had a virus. I use to get a couple a day with a virus. The ones that didn't contain a virus but porno I sent them back to Yahoo and I am sure they were ignored as I probably sent back 10 a day. They need to police their subscribers better. Since I changed my virus protection they don't get into my outlook express mailbox because they contain a virus and my ISP stops them.

If you turn off your preview screen, you won't get the virus from the pictures. Not sure why, you just don't.

Hi Cheryl: but my point is -- you CAN'T get viruses from PICS to begin with anyway!
JPG & GIF attachments cannot carry viruses -- there are a gazillion extensions which can (.exe/.scr/.pif etc) but JPG & GIFs don't
The tricky jerks sometimes name a long file:
blahblah.jpg.scr
...so ya cannot see the end & accidentally open a file thinking it be a JPG, when it really be a .scr & then ye be screwed

Tom, I dont know how truthful that is. There is alot of malicious code attached to many things and you dont see it in the extension because its shows ups like *.jpg but its really *.jpg_blah.blah.blah...

I was 10-20 of those "return to sender" type emails every day and I don't use Outlook. Then a couple of days ago, I downloaded "Ad-Aware" by Lavasoft (free download). Used it to scan my PC & discover a HUGE number of spy-ware or dataminers, etc. on my computer. Had it get rid of them for me--and VOILA! Haven't had a single one since.
And I do have Virus protection on my computer but it didn't help in this case.

Straight from my cable Internet service provider Adelphia:
"Not using the preview pane is also a means of preventing infection by some viruses. There are certain types that are imbedded in graphics or HTML type e-mail that can infect your machine simply by viewing them in the preview window. Turning off this option will help safeguard you from these."

You're not likely to get a run of the mill virus from a .jpg or .gif file. The big danger is a trojan horse. Many trojans were designed to be imbeded and delivered by graphics. It can sit in your temporary internet files and do its dirty work. When you clear your cache, it disappears and your next scan will never detect that it was there. The JS/Card Stealer trojan is a good example of this type of trojan.
The light at the end of the tunnel will turn out to be an oncoming train.

I use Outlook Express and run Norton. It has caught 3 viruses in the year I have used it so I don't get very many considering I process hundreds of Ebay emails a month.
If you have a good virus program you don't have to worry about it. Norton has auto update (it updated itself just a few minutes ago) so when a new virus is reported it will be ready to catch it and I know it works.
