Glassgirl, its about 6 inches tall and 3 inches accross, generally the shape of a pear.....just under 2 1/2 deep...

Trai, I do not think it was a flask for liquid because its not air tight. If ya hold it up to a light you can see into the seams.........

My guess would be a powder horn. 6 " is too large for a snuff flask. Seams could have sepearted with wear. Also toolarge for holy water.
Grapgics suggest Italian or German origination. Images are greek or Roman gods.
VERY nice piece. does it have any hallmarks? look around the seams..
Also rotate the flask 180 and give us a good shot of the top.

Looks like a powder flask, look that up on google and should give you some ideas... shape and size is correct.

Do not think preachers carried powder horns around because if they did they would be fair game to get shot.

Could be due to age that there is some separation now. Look at the face on the flask.This was a church item. IMHO
A powder horn had to be tough to endure the weather and abuse.[dry] otherwise no bang bang.

micmic66, its a powder flask not a powder horn. If its old and not a repo it will be worth serious money. You need to have a good antique gun guy look at it. From you photos it looks old. GOOD LUCK if old its a rare flask.

Nudity wasn't frowned upon at one time. Many artists painted nude females and nude Goddesses were used as symbols on certain items.
nothing I have seen in a biblical sense
Actually Eve was nude in the Garden of Eden.

Ah, but if it belonged to Cole, he was a lawyer, probably well read, and would know of the mythical Gods, even if he was a Baptist. Which by the way was slightly unusual since the baptist church did not "boom" in the States until the 1880's if I remmeber correctly. Could be that he wasn't a Baptist during the War.

Picture of the naked lady was very common as it represented the goddess of good harvest.
This dates back to ancient Greece and Rome and was carried into Europe and it still is with us today.
I made an assumption that the cap and flask since found together belonged to the same person.
This flask was not something the average joe would be carrying around due to cost for those times.
The front looks like the god Zeus [Greek]
